Abstract
1371458 Propellants SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 5 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 56134/72 Heading C1D A propellant composition comprises nitrocellulose, an explosive oil of calorific value greater than 1200 cals./g., a plasticizer, a stabilizer, a combustion catalyst, and from 13À8 to 25% by weight of cyclotrimethylenetrinitroamine or cyclotetramethylenetetranitroamine. The explosive oil may be nitroglycerine, nitroglycol, butane-triol trinitrate, or isobutane-triol trinitrate. Suitable plasticizers are triacetin, ethyl phthalate, and octyl phthalate, and suitable stabilizers are centralite, 2-nitro-diphenylamine, and diphenyl urethane. Combustion catalysts referred to are a lead salt, lead monoxide and a mixture of lead monoxide and copper monoxide. Sucrose acetoisobutyrate or sucrose octoacetate may be included as a combustion retarder and acetylene black as a combustion accelerator. The composition may be prepared in the form of a block by adding the stabilized and plasticized explosive oil to a mould containing granules of the other ingredients and gelatinizing the product by stoving. The composition produces very little exhaust smoke on burning, so that tracking and guidance of a missile by infra-red radiation are facilitated.
