Abstract

1371259 Calendering TAMPELLA AB OY 5 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 56115/72 Heading D2A A dried paper or cardboard web has its surface smoothed by passing the web round a driven roller 5 and contacting the surface with polishing rods 17 whereby the surface is plastically deformed and thereby smoothed, the rods 17 being rotated at a surface speed below that of the web. The roller 5 has a soft cover 6, and each rod 17 is rotatably supported by a holder 16 carried by a beam 11 which is pivoted at 12 and connected at 13 to a hydraulic ram 14, 15 used for varying the pressure. The holders 16 are fitted with electrical resistance heaters for heating the rods 17. The web may be coated on its surface and it may be the coating which is deformed. The coating may be of thermoplastic material. The apparatus can be duplicated so that both surfaces of the web are made smooth. [GB1371259A]
