Abstract
1410128 Polymerisation reactor; mixing apparatus CONTINENTAL OIL CO 2 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972 6 April 1972] 5343/73 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division C3] A polymerisation reactor of at least 5,000 gallon capacity, for aqueous dispersion polymerisation of monomers consisting substantially of at least one vinyl monomer, comprises an upright generally cylindrical reaction zone with dish-shaped ends, an agitation system and a cooling means, the agitation system which is designed to promote roll-over circulation comprising a rotatable agitator in the lower portion of the reaction zone and a stator-type agitator, the rotatable agitator providing substantially laminar flow about a generally vertical central axis and the stator-type agitator being located generally vertically near the periphery of the reaction zone and providing localized turbulent mixing near the reaction zone periphery. The rotatable agitator may be a bottom-entering agitator having four paddle blades, preferably pitched at an angle of from 30 to 60 . The stator-type agitator may be a vertical plate or plates fixed to the reactor peripheral wall or agitation means providing countercurrent liquid circulation. The cooling means is preferably a substantially vertical, externally-cooled condensing tube mounted flush with the reactor interior surface so that condensed vapour flows directly into the reactor, (Figs. 2 to 5, not shown). A plurality of condenser tubes may have their upper ends connected into a header through which monomer and/or purge gas can flow.
