Abstract

1364758 Foamable vinyl aromatic resin beads MONSANTO Ltd 7 Feb 1973 [2 March 1972] 9664/72 Headings C3C and C3P A particulate foamable vinyl aromatic resin of desired particle size range is made by polymerizing a vinyl aromatic monomer in an aqueous suspension to produce beads of a thermoplastic vinylaromatic resin, a fraction of beads of desired particle size is separated from the remainder of the beads and a volatile liquid blowing agent is incorporated in the separated beads at a temperature above the softening point of the resin under such conditions that agglomeration or fracture of the particles is avoided and foamable resin particles of the desired particle size range are produced. In the examples styrene was polymerized in aqueous suspension to produce beads which were sieved so as to separate a fraction of the desired size. The separated beads were suspended in water, optionally together with pentabromophenyl allyl ether as a flame-retardant, and a mixture of n- and isopentane was incorporated into the beads. The beads may be prefoamed with steam and then moulded into a block in a perforated mould using steam. [GB1364758A]
