Abstract
1404290 Chemically finished carbon filaments BAYER AG 24 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 49422/73 Heading C1 [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Carbon filaments are covered by a polymer skin comprising polymerized olefinically unsaturated monomers, the polymer skin having a thickness of from 50 to 10,000 nm. Preferably the filaments consist of more than 80% by weight of carbon and have oriented turbostratic structures in which the normals of the 002-lattice planes have a preferred direction perpendicular to the fibre axis, and the polymer skin comprises polymerized vinyl and/or vinylidene monomers, or polymerized diolefins. Such filaments are made by reacting carbon filaments in the presence of at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer in an electrical field in such a way that a transport of charges is produced. In apparatus as shown, carbon filaments 8 pass around graphite roller 4 and plastics rollers 5, 6 and 9, and are immersed between rollers 5 and 6 in the bath 1 of electrolyte 2. In examples this is a mixture of acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and tertiary butanol or of acrylic acid and water. Current measured by ammeter 11 is supplied by power pack 10 to graphite roller 4 and hence the carbon filaments as anode, and to graphite board 2 as cathode. The voltage between graphite roller 4 and calomel electrode 13 is measured by voltmeter 14, which effectively indicates the voltage between the carbon filaments 8 and electrode 13. Nitrogen, or gaseous monomers, may be bubbled through the bath, which can be maintained at from -50 to +200C. After passage through the electrolysis bath, the filaments have an extremely thin skin of the copolymer of acrylic acid and methyl methacrylate or of polyacrylic acid, depending on the electrolyte used, visible through interference colours. Filaments so made have tougher tensile strength than the starting filaments and may be impregnated with epoxide or polyester resins to produce composite reinforced plastics materials having interlaminar shear strengths approaching that of the pure resin. In a typical example, filaments of tensile strength 2À3 GN/m.<SP>2</SP>, density 1À85 x 10<SP>3</SP> Kg./m.<SP>3</SP> and breaking elongation 1À0% are treated to give coated filaments of tensile strength 2À7 GN/m.<SP>2</SP> and breaking elongation 1À1%.
