Abstract

1435106 Tyre and wheel rim assemblies DUNLOP Ltd 4 Oct 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 45856/72 Heading B7C Lubricant contained within an inflated envelope, e.g. an annular tube 15, is released into the tyre cavity 19 upon the envelope rupturing in response to a fall in the pressure of the air within the cavity. In the illustrated embodiment the tube is thinnest in its crown portion 16. Lubricant is introduced via valve 17 or via a separate plugged hole, and the tube after positioning in well 14 is inflated via valve 17 to a pressure slightly below the desired pressure of air in cavity 19. Air is introduced into the cavity via a separate valve (not shown) until the desired pressure is reached and the tube is theninflated to a pressure slightly in excess of the desired pressure. Upon the tyre puncturing the tube will expand until it ruptures in the crown portion. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), air is introduced into the cavity and the tube via the same valve stem (18), the valve stem opening directly into the cavity and a one-way valve being provided between the stem and the tube.
