Abstract
1442715 Nutrient media for microbiological testing BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM GmbH 11 Jan 1974 [11 Jan 1973] 1456/74 Heading C6F [Also in Division G1] An aqueous nutrient medium (pH about 7.6) particularly suited for the culturing of microorganisms associated with bacterial urinary infections in the evaluation of chemotherapeutic substances, consists of the following substances in specified ranges of amounts viz. L-arginine, L-aspartic acid, L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid, glycocoll, L-histidine, L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-lysine, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, L-proline, L-threonine, L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine, L-valine, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, anhydrous sodium acetate, sodium pyruvate, sodium glycerophosphate pentahydrate, magnesium sulphate heptahydrate, adenine, guanine, uracil, D-glucose, inositol, choline chloride, nicotinamide, thiamine hydrochloride, riboflavin, pyridoxin hydrochloride, calcium pantothenate, folic acid, biotin and p-nitrophenyl propanetriol, together with an effective amount of an antifungal compound such as pimaricin, and, optionally, sufficient agar to solidify the medium. A cardboard support may be impregnated with the medium and the medium dried thereon, the medium may then be covered with a coloured filter membrane and the whole put in a sterile wrapping or container until required for use. In use, the rehydrated medium is seeded with the infective organism, discs charged with a test therapeutic substance are applied to the medium and the growth intensity of the organism with reference to the diameter and/ or density of the inhibition zone thus formed is evaluated with the aid of an interpretive chart. Alternatively, dummy nutrient cardboard discs which have been appropriately colour printed to simulate inhibition zones, may be utilized.
