Abstract
1424989 Spinning processes; multiple twist spindles UNIROYAL Inc 24 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 23464/74 Headings DID and D1F A plied, bulked continuous filament yarn is produced, in one continuous operation, by (a) drawing first and second continuous filament yarns 11, 31, each having only a producer's twist, at equal linear speeds and under tension from supplies 10, 30 to a plying station while ballooning the yarn 11 about the yarn 31; (b) plying the yarns 11, 31 to one another at the plying station; (c) drawing the plied yarn 41 away from the plying station at a linear speed greater than that at which the yarns 11, 31 are fed to the plying station for subjecting the yarn 41 to a tension greater than that on each of the yarns 11, 31, thereby to maintain a stable balloon; (d) drawing the yarn 41 from the plying station first through a heating zone 62, 63 and then through a drying and cooling zone 36, 37, and for concurrently relaxing the tension on the yarn 41, for twist-setting the plied yarn; and (e) drawing the twist-set plied yarn 51 from the zone 36, 37 to a take-up station 8 for winding the yarn 51 into a package 49. As shown, the yarns 11, 31 are fed from packages 10, 30 at stations 4, 5, the station 5 being disposed within a ballooning station 6. The yarn 11 passes through pigtail guides 9, 9', around tensioning discs 12 and through pigtail guides 14, 15, 16 to rolls 17, 18 mounted on a stationary housing 74. The roll 18 is driven whilst the roll 17 is an idler roll. The roll 18 comprises sections 18', 18" of different diameters and is coated with a slippage-preventing material, e.g. aluminium oxide. A second idler roll 17' is coaxial with the roll 17 but is independently rotatable. The yarn 11 passes several times around the roll 17 and the section 18' and through pigtail guides 19, 20, 21 to the station 6 including a pot 80 arranged atop of which is a stub shaft 76 rotatably supporting a flier 22 having arms each terminating in a yarn guide or pigtail 23. A plate 24 is secured to a hollow spindle 58, Fig. 2, and is rotated in the direction of arrow 50, Fig. 1, by a motor 52, Fig. 2. From the guide 21, the yarn 11 passes through the guide 23 and an aperture 81 in the plate 24, into a radial passage 57 in the spindle 58 and into the interior 58' of the spindle 58. Arranged in the pot 80, is an L- shaped flier 84 freely rotatably mounted on the shaft 76. The yarn 31 passes, from the package 30, through a passage 86 and a slot 85 in the flier 84, through passages 87, 88 in the shaft 76, through a guide 90, out of the pot 80 through an aperture 89 and through a pigtail 91 to pass several times around rolls 26, 27 carried by a housing 93, the roll 26 'being driven. The diameter of the roll 26 is equal to that of the section 18 so that the linear speeds of the yarns 11, 31 are equal. The yarn 31 passes through a passage 75 in the frame 93 and into the spindle interior 58' in which the yarns are plied together so that they retain only the producer's twist. The plied yarn 41 passes around a grooved idler roll 28, through a pigtail 29 and several times around the roll 17' and the section 18" so that the yarn 41 is drawn at a somewhat higher speed than that of the yarns 11, 31 to stretch the yarn 41 and maintain a stable balloon. The yarn is fed to a twist setting station 7 comprising (a) a heating zone having a closed cylindrical jacket 35 supplied with steam and containing fixed open-ended parallel tubes 62, 63, a curved guide plate 61 and idler rolls 33, 34' and (b) a drying and cooling zone having freely rotatable rolls 36, 37, an idler roll 42 coaxial with the roll 33, and an idler roll 34" coaxial with, but having a smaller diameter than, the roll 34'. The roll 42 is rotatable independently of the roll 33 but the rolls 34', 34" are integral. The yarn 41 passes several times around the rolls 33, 34', through the tube 62, around the plate 61, and through the tube 63. The plied twist-set yarn 51 passes over rolls 36, 37, through pigtails 38, 39, several times around the rolls 42, 34", over a guide bar 46 at the station 8 and through a yarn guide 96' on a traversing rod 96 to be wound into a package 49. The linear speed of the yarn 51 passing over the roll 34" is less than that of the yarn 41 passing over the roll 34' so that the tension on the yarn passing through the heating and cooling zones is relaxed to a point sufficient to prevent the formation of slack therein. In the heating zone, the yarn 41 may be subjected to dry heat, i.e. it is not contacted by the steam, or moist heat, i.e. it is contacted by the steam. 1315814 Metal reinforced rubber DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 5 Aug 1970 [7 Aug 1969] 39510/69 Headings D1P PBX PAX PC1H2B PC1H3D PC2A2X PC2A9 PC2A12A3 PC2A12B1 PC2A12B5 PC2A12B4 PC2C3 PC2C4 and PC2C12 [Also in Division B2] Chromium containing metal filaments, e.g. of stainless steel or chromium plated steel are coated with an aqueous dispersion of an adhesion promoting mixture of an elastomer and the constituents of a phenol-formaldehyde resin, the filaments dried then immersed in a rubber composition. The rubber is vulcanized by heating, to give a filament reinforced matrix with enhanced adhesion between the filaments and the matrix. The filaments are of less than 0.004 inches diameter, and may be twisted into strands, which may in turn be twisted into cords. The phenolic constituent of the resin may be resorcinol, m-amino phenol, 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene or 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene. The wires may have a serrated, crenelated or other non- circular cross-section. The rubber may be natural rubber, or a copolymer of butadiene with one or more of styrene, carboxylated styrene, vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile, itaconic acid, fumaric acid or an unsaturated ketone. After being coated with the adhesion reinforcing mixture the cords are dried at 100C before embedding in the rubber and curing. Various rubber additives are specified.
