Abstract

1483649 High pressure apparatus SIGURDSSONS MEK VERKSTAD 6 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 39115/74 Heading B1X A method of increasing the pressure exerted on a material in a high-pressure chamber to a desired level and maintaining the pressure for the desired time, and, if desired, controlling the pressure at that level, is effected by means of a first pressure-exerting force acting on the material throughout the duration of the pressure treatment, the method also including the steps of compressing a preselected volume of a pressure compensating medium which is in the liquid state up to the maximum working pressure to a selected, adjustable pressure lower than the first-mentioned pressure by means of second pressureexerting force in such a way as to cause the pressure of the medium to react, during the pressurising phase, on the force generating the first-mentioned pressure, and causing the pressure of the medium, should it deviate from the selected value, to be restored by regulating the volume and/or the pressure of the medium. Where the volume of the material under pressure is reduced as a result of reaction or phase conversion, the applied pressure may be maintained at a constant value by a controlled reduction of the volume of the medium. In one embodiment, a high pressure apparatus comprises a pressure cylinder 1, a central reaction chamber 2 for material 5, and two pressure pistons 3 attached to presses 4. The cylinder is surrounded by three concentric steel jackets, 6, 7, 8. Gaps 10 and chamber 11 are filled with a hydraulic liquid, preferably oil, which forms a support pressure medium and a pressure compensating medium for the pressure cylinder and the pistons. The spaces 10 and 11 are connected via a channel 14 to a valve 15, set to open at a selected pressure. The method and apparatus is for the emission of graphite to synthetic diamonds and for making boron nitride crystals under controlled pressure/temperature conditions. [SE7312538L]
