Abstract

1407730 Golf ball UNIROYAL INC 19 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 34376/73 Heading A6D A golf ball has a plurality of depressions each having a diameter of 0.150+0.015 inch distributed over its surface in a pattern which conforms to a regular icosahedron inscribed on the surface. As shown the pattern is made up to twenty spherical triangles indicated by broken lines 14, 17. All or substantially all of the depressions can be bowl-shaped having a depth of .015 + .003 inch but the depressions at the vertices of the triangles can be of pentagonal (Fig 4, not shown). There can be a total of 252 depressions 12 of which can be of pentagonal form. The depressions may occupy approximately 50% of the surface of the ball and the arrangement of the depressions is such that all circumferential pathways of width .005 inch or greater intersect at least one of the depressions. The ball may comprise a fluid, liquid or solid core the later being of metal or of synthetic plastics or of elastomeric material, the core being surrounded by a winding of elastomeric yarns or filaments or by an elastomeric composition together with an outer cover in which the depressions are formed in a moulding operation.
