Abstract
1461325 Heat-shrinking tubular elements on to container necks COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 12 March 1974 [12 March 1973] 10998/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] A method of applying and heat-shrinking a tubular element of plastics material, e.g. films of polyvinylchloride, polyesters, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylidene or polyisoprene, on to the neck 13 of a container, such as an aluminium or aluminium alloy toothpaste tube or a bottle, comprises positioning the container 11 at an element applying station 31, opening the leading end of a supply of heatshrinkable tubing 59 by means of a floating mandrel while advancing the tubing 59 towards the container neck 13, severing a leading end portion of the tubing to provide a tubular covering element, pushing the covering element on to the neck by further advancement of the tubing, and heat-shrinking the covering element on to the container neck. In an apparatus for performing the method, toothpaste tubes 11 are fed to the station 31 on an intermittently operable carrier drum (33), Fig. 3 (not shown), to and from which they are carried continuously by a chain conveyer having cantilevered tube supporting fingers (22), Fig. 2 (not shown). The tubes 11 which are fed to the station 31 from a drying oven (20), Fig. 1 not shown), may retain sufficient heat at least partially to heat-shrink the tubular elements on to the tube necks when they are applied at the station 31. The carrier drum (33) and a portion (30), Fig. 1 (not shown), of the chain conveyer adjacent the drum are moved intermittently by a Geneva mechanism. The tubes 11 are held in grooves (34), Fig. 3 (not shown), of the drum by suction. The tubing 59 which is supplied in flattened condition from a reel (60), Fig. 3 (not shown), is opened out around a floating mandrel having portions 63, 66, 67, 68, 69 and 70. Chuck jaws 98 are movable inwards towards the mandrel to clamp the tubing against a sliding sleeve 96 carried on the mandrel. The chuck jaws 98 are movable axially of the mandrel, when the tubing is clamped, to advance the sleeve 96 and tubing and to feed the tubular element on to the neck of the tube 11. The tubular element is severed prior to being fed on to the tube neck by circular knives 81 mounted on brackets 82 for movement into and out of engagement with the tubing on the mandrel and the brackets 82 are rotatable continuously about the mandrel, the operations of feeding the tubes 11, feeding the tubing 59 and severing the tubing are synchronized. The machine includes two stations 31 associated with the drum 33 so that two tubes can be treated simultaneously.
