Abstract
1470745 Animal feed MEPROS ANSTALT 3 Oct 1975 [4 Oct 1974] 40611/75 Heading A2B An animal feed is made by processing protein and carbohydrate substances into a mixture, forming a liquid emulsion from fat, water and aromatic components free from meat and fish odour and taste, and mixing the emulsion and the mixture to form a plastic material which is filled into containers and sterilised. Aromatic components specified include cheese, chocolate, sugared cocoa powder, fruit concentrates, and spices.
Description
This invention relates to a method of making an animal feed. The invention further relates to an animal feed made according to the method.
The known animal feeds, by way of example heatsterilized feeds filled into tin cans, throughout exhib.it a taste and odour indicative of meat and/or fish. Although such animal feeds are generally adequate, practice has revealed it to be of advantage to change them after the passage of a certain space of time in order to avoid monotony in feedihg. It is therefore desirable and generally recognized that the rhythm of feeding should occasionally be altered without adversely influencing the properties in terms of the physiology of nutrition. The animal keeper is furthermore enabled to reward the animal in training or for some other good performance with nourishing dainty morsels.
The invention therefore has for its objective to provide an animal feed which avoids the disadvantages of feeds one-sided in terms of taste and which possesses an aroma other than the conventional meat and fish taste and odour.
The method of making the animal feed of the type described is characterized by the fact that protein and carbohydrate substances capable i
of being fed are processed into a mixture;
that, separately therefrom, a liquid emulsion containing fat, water and aromatic components free from meat and fish taste and odour is prepared, and that the mixture and the emulsion are then intimately mixed and processed together to form a plastic compound which is filled into containers and sterilized.
4801^
The animal feed prepared according to the method is characterised by the fact that it contains emulsified aromatic components which are free from meat and fish odour and taste.
It has surprisingly been discovered that aromatic components free from meat and fish odour and taste, such as cheese, chocolate, sugared cocoa powder, fruit concentrates, natural spices or their extracts or combinations thereof, are readily eaten by domestic animals if the aromatic components are emulsified with animal and/or vegetable fats and water. An emulsion So prepared contains the aromatic components in fine dispersion and is added to a mixture of carbohydrates and proteins of animals and/or vegetable origin for the production of the animal feed.
The mixture is preferably finely dispersed so that the emulsion is intimately mixed with the components of the mixture. The moist plastic and sterilizable compound is heat-stabilized after being filled into containers.
By way of example tin cans, deep-drawn aluminium containers with tear-off foil covers or plastic hoses may be used for containers.
It has been found that the aforementioned aromatic components alone, i.e. in non-emulsified condition, do not have the desired effect because they are hardly eaten by domestic animals. The fat/water emulsification of the aromatic substances and their fine dispersion in the other ingredients of the animal feed so obtained provides a form of presentation, preferred by animals, of unconventional animal feeds that do not taste or smell of meat and fish.
- 3’ 4 2017
The invention is entirelv different from the so-called softmoist animal feeds which also contain chemical components which do not taste and smell of. meat and fish.,, by way of example glycerin and propylene glycol. The object of these additions, however, does not reside in lending the animal feed a certain taste which is partly sweet or bitter. Much rather, these additions must be regarded, in connection with the water percentage always necessary, as actual preservative additions and, respectively, a preservative system of components effective without the action of heat.
The production of animal feed free from the odour and taste of meat and fish will now be discussed in greater detail with reference to the examples here following without, however, limiting the scope of the invention.
Ea:amp le ί kg meat scraps (muscular substance scraped off bones), kg collagen, 20 kg water and 2 kg sugar are comminuted and mixed in a high-speed cutter. If desired, watersoluble vitamins and mineral substances may be added to this aqueous suspension. In parallel therewith a warm emulsion is prepared by emulsifying 21 kg animal.fat with 16 kg chocolate powder and 15 water and, possibly, fat-soluble vitamins and oxidation inhibitors in a colloid mill. The aqueous and the emulsified phases are then mixed in a mixer, the compound obtained filled into deepdrawn aluminium containers with tear-off foil covers, and the containers sterilized at 125°C. The plastic product made according to this method and tasting and smelling of chocolate is employed as dog food,
ExampLe 2 kg meat scraps, 2 kg collagen, 30 kg skim-milk and 3 kg dextrose (glucose) are intimately mixed and comminuted. In parallel therewith, a warm emulsion is prepared by emulsifying 20 kg peanut fat with 15 kg sweetened cocoa powder and 10 kg water. The phase containing skim-milk and the emulsion are then intimately mixed and the compound, still warm and pleasantly tasting and smelling of cocoa, filled into a plastic hose which is in turn sterilized at 12T°C in an autoclave after being sealed. The product so obtained is used as dog food in training.
Example 2 kg soy meal from which the fat has been removed, 1 kg gelatin, 4 kg sugar and 45 kg warm whey are finely dispersed in a high-frequency mixer. This dispersion is then added to an emulsion of 2 kg sweetened cocoa powder, 6 kg lard and 15 kg water in a high-speed agitator and the product pumped through a colloid mill. The moist plastic product is heated to Votator (Trade Mark) type and then aseptically filled into aluminium containers with tear-off foil covers. The compound constitutes a dog food which pleasantly tastes and smells of cocoa.
ExampLe 4
A product of 65 kg fresh animal blood, 8 kg gelatin, kg hydrolysed starch of the maltodextrin (Trade Mark) type, 2 kg tamarind, 8 kg cocoa-nut fat and 7 kg water are prepared according to Example 3. The moist plastic compound, which does not taste and smell of meat and fish, constitutes a cat food.
- 42017
Example 5 kg blood plasma, 6 kg pork rind and 5 kg water are very finely comminuted. In parallel therewith 0,5 kg glycyrrhizin (licorice extract), 0.5 kg asa foetida and
kg water are emulsified in 9 kg lard. The compound is further processed in accordance with Example No. 1. The sweet product with an animal taste and smell is suitable to feed cats and dogs.
Example 6
44 kgmeat scraps, 22 kg sodium caseinate, 20 kg water and 10 kg blood plasma are intimately mixed and homogenized in a high-speed cutter. At the same time 12 kg half-fat cheese is emulsified with 1 kg sodium citrate and 10 kg water and the emulsion processed into a plastic product with the comminuted compound in a cutter. It is then filled into deep-drawn aluminium containers with tear-off foil covers and sterilized at 125°C. The product, which smells of cheese, is used as dog and cat food.
Example 7 kg fodder yeast, 2 kg gelatin, 1 kg sugar and 45 kg skim-milk are dispersed in a high-frequency mixer. At the same time 5 kg lard, 4 kg orange concentrate and 10 kg water are emulsified at 50°C and the emulsion is then added to the fodder yeast dispersion. The moist plastic compound is filled into aluminium containers with tearoff foil covers which are then sterilized at 125°C. The product which tastes and smells of fruit constitutes dog food.
