Abstract
Glass is tempered by contact with solid particles fluidised with a gas to ensure that transfer from the glass the glass to the particles. The fluidised material is kept in a steady state of uniform fluidisation. Pref. the fluidised bed is maintained at 30-150 degrees C, and has a mass/unit volume of 0.3-3.97 (0.3-2.35) g/cc, and the particles have a mean particle size of 5-120 mu. The state of steady flow is at 0.045-5.61 cm/sec. The glass is doda-time glass 2.3-12 mm thick and is heated to 610-680 degrees C prior to quenching in the fluidised bed. Tempering streses are set up in the glass which are adequate and which reduces the loss by fracture, the surface damage being negligible.
