Abstract
1472513 Moulding latex strips AUTOMATIC BRAIDING CO (NOTTINGHAM) Ltd 11 Sept 1975 [24 Jan 1975] 3101/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A thin rubber strip is produced by producing a stream of latex, gelling the outer surface of said stream to form a skin of gelled latex thereon, the skin having a predetermined peripheral dimension, shaping, by means of a shaping orifice, the gelled skin so as to define the periphery of the desired cross-section of the skin to be produced, maintaining the flow of latex to said stream such that said desired cross-section is maintained, said shaping orifice being disposed in, or closely adjacent to the surface of, a coagulant bath, and discharging said shaped skinned stream to said bath. As shown in Fig. 2, latex is delivered via conduit 8 to a nozzle disposed above a tank of coagulant 4 in which is disposed transverse roller 10 for taking off a rubber strip 11. The stream of latex emerging from the nozzle is shaped by conduit 5 which defines a gelling zone and has inlet 5a for the latex which is of generally circular cross-section and at lower end 5b a shaping orifice, from which emerges rubber strip of rectangular cross-section. In Fig. 4, a shaped conduit is replaced by rollers 13, and 14, driven by gears 15, 16 and 17, and dispersed in tank 12 of coagulant. The latex is fed via nozzle 18, the speed being controlled so that a pool of latex is created within a surrounding layer of coagulant in a zone between the rollers above the nip. The apparatus of Fig. 4 may be modified for producing several strips simultaneously, as illustrated in Fig. 7 (not shown), or a wide strip as illustrated in Fig. 8 (not shown). Means for detecting the levels of coagulant and latex are described in Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown).
