Description
SS53 3 —
This invention relates to a reversible garment using a zip fastener.
An embodiment of the invention will be described, by way 5 of example, with reference to Figs 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing, which show perspective views of the upper part of a pair of pants.
Although the invention will be described with reference to this particular embodiment, it will be appreciated 10 that the invention could be applied to other articles, including, for example, skirts and jackets.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown in Fig 1, a pair of pants made in such a way that the outside of the pants is in a colour or pattern 1 different from the 15 colour or pattern 2 of the inside of the pants which is indicated in the drawing by shading. In Fig 2, the pair of pants shown in Fig 1 has been reversed, so that the colour or pattern 2, indicated by shading, now appears on the outside and the colour or pattern 1 appears on the 20 inside.
The colours 1 and 2 may be achieved by printing or weaving the fabric in such a way that the colour or jjattem 1 appears on one side and the colour or pattern 2 appears on the other side of the same piece of fabric.
Alternatively, the colour differences may be obtained, for example, where facings or pockets are required by stitching a piece of material having one colour over a piece of material of the other colour.
In the particular embodiment shown In the drawing, the centre Front portion 3 on the right hand side of the pants, as viewed in Fig 1, is on the left hand side of the pant's, when they are turned inside out, i.e. reversed, 5 as seen in Fig 2. Similarly, the centre front portion h which is on the left hand side, as viewed in Fig 1, is on the right hand side, as seen in Fig 2. The taper shaped centre front portions 3 and h are, in the particular embodiment, each made of double layers of fabric 10 one layer being of the colour or pattern 1 and the other of the colour or pattern 2. A reversible zip fastener 5 is sewn between the two adjacent layers of the respective centre front portions of the pants. The parts 6 and 7 of the zip fastener 5 are positioned on the respective centre 15 front portions 3 and h in such a way that when the zip fastener is closed, the interlocking edges of the parts 6 and 7 are arranged about the centre line 8 of the overlapping centre front portions 3 and ·
It will be appreciated that the centre front portions need 20 not be tapered in the way shown and that in certain applications the parts corresponding to the centre front portions 3 and k of the pants described above may have some other outline. The overlapping portions, for example, may he 7: cm: tangular with the z ip fastener arranged 2r> about a con Ire lino when it is closed.
It will also ho understood that the two centre front portions 3 and h together with the zip fastener form a -3- contre unit which is simply attached to tlie left and right fronts of the pants by seaming and edge stitching. Pockets are provided as patches on opposite sides of the main piece of fabric in such a way that a pocket on one 5 side covers the same portion of the main portion of fabric as a pocket on the other side. The problem that would occur when the garment is turned inside out if separate insert pockets wore used is thereby avoided.
Although, in (.lie particular embodiment, the same part of 10 the main piece of fabric is common to a pocket on icspectivo opposite sides of the garment and forms the inner wall of each pocket, it is not essential that the piece forming the patch pocket on one side should coincide with the piece forming the patch pocket on the other side. 1*5 Although in the prei'erred embodiment, the zip fastener is arranged about the centre line 8, it would be possible, if it were required that a garment should give a different, fit in the inside-out configuration from the normal, to arrange for tho zip fastener to be off-contre.
Claims (6)
1. A reversible garment, the outside of which has a colour or pattern different from that of the inside, including a main part made from one layer of material, a zip fastener having two parts, one of the parts being attached to a first portion of the main part and the other of the parts being attached to a second portion of the main part, the first and second portions being coupled together to overlap one another when the zip fastener is closed, and a second and a third layer being arranged on the first and the second overlapping portions respectively to provide each of the overlapping portions with a double layer of material, the arrangement being such that reversal of the garment causes the colour or pattern on the inside and the outside of the garment to be interchanged.
2. A reversible garment as claimed in claim 1 in which when the zip fastener is closed the interlocking edges of the two parts of the zip fastener are arranged about the centre line of the overlapping portions.
3. A garment as claimed in either claim 1 or claim 2 in which the overlapping portions are tapered.
4. A garment as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which pockets are provided as patches on opposite sides of a portion of the garment.
5. A garment as claimed in claim 1 substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings. MACLACHLAN & DONALDSON, Applicants1 Agents,
6. 47 Merrion Square, DPBLIN 2.
