Abstract

A brake device for use with a wheelchair includes a pawl member 57 pivotally mounted on a bar 56 which is itself mounted on the frame 51 of the wheelchair. In use the pawl member 57 engages a wheel 21 of the wheelchair to allow rotation of the wheel 21 in the desired direction but prevent return rotational movement of the wheel 21. A ball catch 64 is shown provided to hold the pawl member 57 in a non-operative position when desired. The bar 56 is mounted by a metal support plate 50 to upright 51 of the wheelchair but in other embodiments (Figures 1-2,3-4) support plate is mounted on wheelchair arm.
