Abstract
Antitumour anthracycline glycosides of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is hydrogen or hydroxyl and R2 is alpha -L-pyranosylhexose (II) or (III) <IMAGE> are obtained by deamination of 3',4'-diepi analogues of daunorubicin and doxorubicin in a cold acidic medium such as 1N aqueous acetic acid, and at 0 DEG C, with NaNO2. In this series of anthracyclines, the doxorubicin analogues have on parenteral administration an antileukaemic activity against murine leukaemias which is comparable to or better than that of doxorubicin. They are also active against Gross murine leukaemia on oral administration.
