Abstract
1. A process for the production of magnesium hydride by reaction of magnesium with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a halide of a transition metal of the IVth to VIIIth secondary group of the periodic system, an organomagnesium compound or a magnesium hydride and optionally in the presence of a polycyclic aromatic compound or a tertiary amine, characterized in that magnesium halide (MgX2 with X = Cl, Br, I) is used in less than stoichiometric quantities, based on magnesium metal.
