Abstract
A storage tank comprises an inner storage tank and an outer bund or housing surrounding said inner tank, and a lid or cover engaging with said outer bund or housing so as to totally enclose said inner tank. The inner tank will preferably comprise a pair of tanks located in side-by-side relationship, the axes of said pair tanks being mutually parallel. <Figure 1>
Description
This invention relates to storage tanks, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to oil storage tanks.
Present-day oil storage tanks suffer a number of disadvantages, such 5 disadvantages, inter alia, being their shape, their size and their lack of strength, and the present invention seeks to obviate the above and other disadvantages, by providing an improved form of storage tank.
According to the present invention there is provided a storage tank according to claim 1. Such a tank comprises an inner storage tank and an outer bund or housing surrounding said inner tank, and a lid or cover engaging with said outer bund or housing so as to totally enclose said inner tank, with the inner tank itself being made up of a pair of cylindrical tanks located in side-by-side, spaced relationship, the interiors of these tanks communicating one with the other through the intermediary of one or more connection pipes formed integrally with said tanks. The axes of these two tanks will preferably be mutually parallel. -2The inner storage tanks are cylindrical, and the bund or outer housing and the lid or cover are preferably shaped to closely match the overall shape of the inner tanks.
The lid or cover preferably incorporates one or more movable covers 5 through which access to the inner storage tanks and their interiors may be had.
The inner storage tanks, the outer bund or housing, and the lid or cover are preferably composed of a synthetic plastics material.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, an embodiment 10 thereof will now be described, by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a storage tank in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the tank of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of the inner storage tank.
Referring to the drawings, and firstly to Figure 1, there is shown a storage -3tank indicated generally by reference numeral 2. Figure 1 also shows an outer bund or housing 4 and a lid or cover 6, the lid or cover 6 having raisable covers 8 and 10, the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter.
Locatable in the outer bund or housing 4 is an inner tank 12 - referring now 5 to Figures 2 and 3 - the inner tank 12 comprising side-by-side storage tanks 14 and 16 which are connected together by connection pipes 18 and 20 which are formed integrally with the tanks 14 and 16 and through which the interiors of the tanks 14 and 16 are in communication one with the other.
Located in the tops of the storage tanks 14 and 16 are a number of holes or apertures, these being marked 22, 24,26,28 and 30, these holes or apertures being formed in upstanding bosses 32 and 34 on the tops of the storage tanks 14 and 16. The hole or aperture 24 is used for filling the tanks 14 and 16, the hole or aperture 30 is used for drawing oil or other liquid from the tanks, whilst the hole or aperture 22 constitutes an access hole to the interiors of the tanks. An air outlet is indicated at 26, whilst the hole or aperture 28 contains a measuring device for ascertaining the quantity of oil or other liquid in the tanks. -4It will be seen from Figures 1 and 2 that the shapes of the bund or housing 4 and lid or cover 6 closely resemble the shape of the composite inner storage tank 12, and this shaping gives added strength to the storage tank as a whole. In addition, the connection pipes also give added strength to the storage tank, a feature which is absent from known storage tanks.
The inner storage tank 14, the outer bund or housing 4, and the lid or cover 6 are formed of a synthetic plastics material and will be formed by a suitable moulding process.
Whilst the outer bund or housing 4 provides a means of enclosing the inner 10 tanks 14 and 16, it also serves the purpose of containing any overflow or spillage from said inner tanks.
Thus the invention provides a storage tank for liquids, primarily, but not exclusively, for oil, which is strong in construction and aesthetically pleasing, and which includes the facility of preventing spillages or leakages fouling and/or damaging surrounding locations in which the tank is situated.
Claims (10)
- CLAIMS: 1.I. A storage tank for liquids, comprising an inner storage tank and an outer bund or housing surrounding the inner tank in such a way as to contain overflow from the inner storage tank, and a lid or cover engaging with the outer bund or housing so as totally to enclose the inner tank; wherein the inner tank comprises a pair of cylindrical tanks located in side-by-side, spaced relationship, and the interiors of these tanks communicate one with the other through the intermediary of one or more connection pipes formed integrally with said tanks.
- 2. A storage tank according to Claim 1, wherein the inner cylindrical tanks have a plurality of holes or apertures in their tops, through which the tank can be filled with and emptied of liquid.
- 3. A storage tank according to Claim 2, wherein the holes or apertures are formed in upstanding bosses on the tops of the cylindrical tanks.
- 4. A storage tank according to any preceding Claim, wherein the axes of the cylindrical tanks are mutually parallel. -65.
- A storage tank according to any preceding Claim, wherein the outer bund or housing and the lid or cover are shaped to match closely the overall shape of the inner tank.
- 6. A storage tank according to any preceding Claim, wherein the lid or cover incorporates one or more movable covers so as to facilitate access to the inner storage tank and the interior thereof.
- 7. A storage tank according to any preceding Claim, wherein the inner tank, the outer bund or housing, and the lid or cover are composed of a synthetic plastics material.
- 8. A storage tank according to any preceding Claim, in which when in use the cylindrical inner tanks stand upright.
- 9. A storage tank substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
- 10. A storage tank according to any preceding Claim, being filled with oil.
