Abstract

A carton lid (1) has a cover panel (10) and side walls (11) which are formed by folding an inner panel around and bonding it to an outer panel. End walls (12) are also of double thickness and inner panels (41) include cross-struts (13) which extend across and engage cut edges of the adjoining inner panel of the side wall (11).

Description

The invention relates to a carton lid formed from card material.
An object of the invention is to provide a carton lid which has a large degree of strength at the corners.
Another embodiment is to provide a lid which has walls with a large structural support, even where there is a requirement that they do not extend downwardly over the box to a large extent.
According to the invention, there is provided a carton lid 10 comprising?a cover panel; opposed side walls each comprising the following sections in sequence extending from the cover panelsan outer panel, and an inner panel which is partly cut-away at ends thereof adjacent lid corners; opposed end walls each comprising the following sections in sequence extending from the cover panel:an outer panel, and an inner panel, wherein the inner panel is connected at a fold line to a strut at each side, the strut extending across to the adjoining side wall inner panel and engaging it where it is cut away.
I In one embodiment, each end wall inner panel further comprises a side flap extending from each side at the corners into the space where the adjoining side wall inner panel is cut away and abutting against an edge of the side wall inner panel.
In a still further embodiment, the side wall inner panels are bonded to the side wall outer panels.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of some embodiments thereof, given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a carton lid of the invention in an up-turned position; Fig. 2(a) is a cross-sectional side view of the carton 15 lid, and Fig. 2(b) is a cross-sectional side view showing the lid in position on a box; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a card blank for forming the lid; and Fig. 4, 5(a) and 5(b) are perspective views showing 20 assembly of the lid.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a carton lid of the invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The lid 1 comprises a central cover panel 10, a pair of side walls 11, a pair of end walls 12, and corner struts 13. The struts 13 extend across between the side and end walls at each corner at the uppermost part of the lid - against the cover panel 10.
The lid 1 may be used with a carton such as the carton 2 shown in Fig. 2(b). This carton comprises end walls 21 having outer and inner leaves 23 and 24 respectively, and a top panel 25 which provides a top surface for the end walls 21. This box is typical of the type of box for which the lid 1 is useful. The lid 1 applies particularly to boxes of the frame type having double thickness walls such as those illustrated in Fig. 2(b). As is clear from this drawing, when the lid 1 is placed on the box 2 only just over half of the walls extend downwardly over the box 2, the corner struts 13 acting as spacers. There are many situations where such an arrangement is desirable as many end users prefer use of a lid which fits very easily onto a box without the necessity to push it down a large extent. This has been achieved in the present invention without provision of low side and end walls, which arrangement would have caused problems in assembly and could result in a lack of structural strength. Further, it will be appreciated that the lid 1 has a good deal of structural strength at the corners provided by the struts 13.
Referring now to Fig. 3, a blank IB for forming the lid 1 is illustrated. The blank IB comprises a central cover panel 10. Each of the side walls 11 comprises an outer panel 30 and an inner panel 31 extending from the cover panel 10. Each of the inner panels 31 is cut away at each end adjacent the corners at a tapered cut edge 32 and a vertical cut edge 33.
Each of the end walls 12 comprises an outer panel 40 and an inner panel 41 in sequence from the central cover panel 10. At each corner, each inner panel 41 is connected to a strut 13 and to a side flap 45, both being formed of integral card material. The strut 13 is formed by a fold line 4 3 and a cut edge 44 of the inner panel 41. The side flap 45 is formed by a fold line 46 at the edge of the inner panel 41.
Assembly of the lid 1 is illustrated in Figs. 4, 5(a) and 5(b). Initially, the side wall inner flaps 31 are folded over and are bonded to the inside surface of the outer panels 30. The panels of the end walls 12 are then folded around so that the bellows sections 34 collapse as shown in Fig. 4. When the inner panel 41 has been folded around to a vertical position the side flaps 44 snap into position flush with the inner panel 31 to abut against the side edges and provide a flush surface. The corner struts 13 fit against the vertical cut edge 33 and are retained in position by the horizontal cut edge between the edges 33 and 32.
It will be appreciated that the lid 1 may therefore be assembled very simply, and because it may be formed from a single blank production is inexpensive.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described. For example, the side wall inner panels 31 need not necessarily be bonded to the outer panels 30 as they could include an extension flap which is bonded to the cover panel 10, for example. It is not essential that the end wall inner wall inner panels 41 have side flaps 45. The lid may be formed of any suitable card material depending on the end use requirement.

CLAIMS 25 3 A carton lid comprising:a cover panel; opposed side walls each comprising the following sections in sequence extending from the cover panel:an outer panel, and an inner panel which is partly cut-away at ends thereof adjacent lid corners; opposed end walls each comprising the following sections in sequence extending from the cover panel:an outer panel, and an inner panel, wherein the inner panel is connected at a fold line to a strut at each side, the strut extending across to the adjoining side wall inner panel and engaging it where it is cut away. A carton lid as claimed in claim 1, wherein each end wall inner panel further comprises a side flap extending from each side at each corner into the space where the adjoining side wall inner panel is cut away and abutting against an edge of the side wall inner panel. A carton lid as claimed in claims 1 or 2, wherein the side wall inner panels are bonded to the side wall outer panels.
