Abstract

A lacquer composition which comprises water, an alkali soluble acrylic emulsion and a melamine resin. The acrylic emulsion is preferably a thermosetting acrylic polymer colloid dispersion in water which has been catalysed with a 5 melamine resin.

Description

This invention relates to a lacquer composition. In particular it relates to an alcohol resistant aqueous lacquer composition.
It is known to manufacture solvent based lacquers.
These lacquers can have a variety of uses but one particular use is to decorate and protect the caps of bottles particularly perfume bottles.
As will be appreciated, the perfume industry lays great emphasis on the quality and aesthetic appearance of the bottles and the caps. Heretofore, solvent based lacquers have, subject to quality control, found favour in the industry but a difficulty now occurs in that from a safety point of view, solvent based lacquers are loosing favour. A lacquer which might be produced in substitution for the solvent based type would need to satisfy the adhesion characteristics, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance requirements as currently enjoyed by solvent based lacquers.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome these problems.
The invention, therefore, provides a lacquer composition which comprises water, an alkali soluble acrylic emulsion and a melamine resin.
The alkali soluble acrylic emulsion, which is preferably >9309 1 4 a thermosetting acrylic polymer as a colloid dispersion in water, is catalysed with the melamine resin. Preferably, the resin is methoxy methyl methylol melamine.
A slipaid in the form of a polysiloxane, most preferably a polyether modified polysiloxane is incorporated into the lacquer composition.
To increase and enhance the mark resistance of the lacquer composition, a dispersion of aqueous polyethylene and PTFE wax is used. One or more defoamers may be used such as N-butanol or a blend of odourless kerosene and hydrophobic surfactants. In order to enhance the flow of the lacquer composition during application to the required surface such as the exterior face of the cap of a perfume bottle, butyl dioxitol is incorporated into the lacquer which has a slower evaporation rate when compared with that of water.
The invention is not limited by or to the specific embodiment described which can undergo considerable variation without departing from the scope of the invention.
