Abstract

Wood is stored in stacks (1) where there is uniformity of origin, but different cross-sections. There is both dimensional and moisture metre monitoring of drying and final storage at an essentially vertical position before machining for final natural drying with good air circulation. Longitudinal cuts are made depending on the dimensions either by a multi rip-saw machine (10) which has rip-saw blades (13) with wiper blades (23), or at a band saw (30) with an integral band saw blade (33), the tips of which are regularly suaged and side-dressed. Cutters for profiling machines are cleaned in an ultrasonic tank and checked for balancing at a static balancing stand (40) which also checks for uniformity of cutting radii and precise dimensions are determined at an optical sensing device (70) which allows real-time upload to a profiling machine (80). Feeding of a workpiece through the profiling machine (80) is at a rate of 7 to 8 metres per minute for hardwoods. Various calibration and drive aspects of the cutter heads are described to achieve a high-quality product.
