Description
APPARATUS FOR REPELLING BIRDS ELI ABOUTBOUL ASHER AVITAN IIUN C: 17378 17378ELI.BIR HB-9308 15/8/93 FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to apparatus for repelling birds.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Problems with unwanted birds are well known. In agriculture, birds may destroy entire crops of cherries or other fruit. In cities, the presence of congregations of pigeons causes unwanted noise, as well as filth and possibly disease.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention seeks to provide apparatus for repelling birds and other animals.
There is thus provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention a wind driven repeller including a base which is rotatably mounted about a first axis and wind driven driving apparatus rotatably mounted onto the base about at least a second axis perpendicular to the first axis and arranged such that wind driven motion of the driving apparatus causes rotation of the base about the first axis.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the at least second axis is non-intersecting with the first axis.
Preferably, the first axis is a vertical axis and the second axis is a horizontal axis.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the base lies generally in a first plane through which the first axis extends.
Additionally in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the driving apparatus comprises at least one generally planar element which lies in a plane which is non-parallel and non-perpendicular with respect to the first plane.
Further in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the generally planar element lies in a plane which is non-parallel and non-perpendicular with respect to the second axis.
Preferably at least one of the base and the generally planar element is bearing mounted about its respective axis of rotation.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the base is shaped like a bird or fowl and the driving apparatus comprises a pair of wing-like generally planar elements .
Further in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the base is rotatably mounted onto a threaded member for threadable engagement with a vertical mounting shaft.
Reflectors and/or active light sources may be mounted onto the base and the generally planar member for nighttime operation.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The present invention will be understood and appreciated more fully from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the drawings in which: Figs. 1 and 2 are pictorial illustrations of a bird repeller constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention; and Figs. 3 and 4 are respective top view and side view illustrations of the bird repeller of Figs l & 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Reference is now made to Figs. 1 - 4/ which illustrate bird repelling apparatus constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The bird repelling apparatus comprises a base 10, which is preferably generally planar and may be in any suitable shape, such as that of a bird. The base 10 is preferably rotatably mounted onto a threaded socket member 12 for rotation about a first axis 14. Preferably socket member 12 is mounted onto a vertical support shaft 16, such that axis 14 is disposed vertically.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, wind driven driving apparatus 20 is rotatably mounted onto the base 10 about at least a second axis 22 perpendicular to the first axis 14 and arranged such that wind driven motion of the driving apparatus causes the base 10 to rotate about axis 14, as illustrated by arrow 24.
Preferably the wind driven driving apparatus 20 comprises a pair of generally planar elements 26, which may be configured as wings of a bird, which are mounted to permit full 360 degree rotation thereof about second axis 22. Preferably, generally planar elements 26 each lie in a plane which is non-parallel and non-perpendicular with respect to the plane of base 10.
Further in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, each of the generally planar elements 26 lies in a plane which is non-parallel and non-perpendicular with respect to the second axis. Normally each of the generally planar elements 26 lies in a different plane meeting the above criteria.
Preferably, at least one of the base 10 and the generally planar elements 26 is bearing mounted about its respective axis of rotation. More preferably, all of the rotatable mounting are bearing mountings.
It will be appreciated from a consideration of Figs. 1 and 2, that wind impinging onto base 10 and onto generally planar elements 26 from virtually any direction causes rotational motion both of base 10 with respect to shaft 16 about axis 14 and of generally planar elements 26 about axis 22, which in turn causes motion of base 10 about axis 14.
The apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2 may be useful for both day and night operation and may include reflectors 30 and/or active light sources 32, such as chemical or tritium light sources, mounted on one or both of base 10 and elements 26.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited by what has been particularly shown and described hereinabove. Rather the scope of the present invention is defined only by the claims which follow:
