Description
A SEALING WASHER ASSEMBLY \ NATIONAL PLANT HIRE (PROPRIETARY) LIMITED . - 1 - 32809/2 This invention relates to sealing washer assemblies preferably intended to seal openings made by or for roof fixing screws and the like, but not necessarily confined to this purpose.
According to this invention there is provided a sealing washer assembly comprising a metal washer and a member* of resilient material, the metal washer being of discform having an aperture defined by an inside edge of the washer and having an outside edge, the resilient material of said member forming a layer over one surface of the washer, said material also projectin through said aperture and beyond the other surface of the washer, said material also forming a projection from said layer in a direction away from the washer, the projection having a hole therein in register with said aperture, the washer and said member being attached together by engagement of either or both of said edges by said material.
It is understood that the disc-form metal washer may be circula or otherwise and may be curved or flat.
The invention will be described by way o f examples with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:- Pigure 1 is a sectional view of one form of sealing washer assembly in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 to 5 show alternative sealing washer assemblies in accordance with the invention; and Figure 6 and 7 illustrate two different pads of sealing washer assemblies in accordance with the invention.
In Figure 1, which is on a slightly larger scale than the remaining Figures, a part spherical disc-form washer 1 - 2 - 32809/2 made of steel or like relatively rigid material is attached to a resilient liner 2 of plastics material.
Each metal washer 1 has a central aperture 3 of larger diameter than that of an aperture 4, in the liner 2, in register with aperture 3. A layer portion 5 of each liner 2 is generally dished in the same direction as the metal washer hut to a lesser extent, and extends over the lower surface of the metal washer} a centre projection 6 of the liner, which projects from the portion 5 in a direction away from the metal washer 1, is of substantial thickness* The bottom of the centre portion 6 is preferably conical, decreasing in diameter, (i.e. tapering) downwardly as shown at 7.
The top 8 of each liner is extended as a centrall perforated head 9 joined to the remainder of the liner by a waisted portion 10. The head 9 projects through the aperture sh in the metal wafeeer and beyond, (i.e. above,) the upper surface, of the washer. The upper surface 11 of the waisted portion 10 is bevelled at an angle to extend over and be grippingly engaged by the adjacent annular portion of the steel washer 1.
The steel washers may be attached to the corresponding plastics liners by pressing the two members together, the plastics having sufficient flexibility to allow the perforated portion of the steel washer 1 to ride overthe head 9 of the liner and grippingly engage the waisted portion 10.
Instead of making the liners separately and thereafter attaching them to the metal washers, the liners may be moulded 32809/2 directl into the metal washers 1, the inside edges of which will form and be embedded in, and thus engaged by, the waisted portions 10 of the liners 2. If desired in this embodiment, the metal washers may be punched to provide easily breakable webs 12 (see Figure 7) to form a pad of assemblies.
The pads of sealing washer assemblies may be made with the plastics liners made in the orm of pads of either long strips of single in-line liners or blocks of such liners with each one connected to at least one or more similar liners. The connection is effected by thin strips 13 of plasties material (see Figure 6).
The metal washers will then be attached to these liners so that they may be either manipulated or mechanically handled or use as required without having to be assembled individually .
In the alternative arrangements shown in Figures 2 to 5, parts are numbered similarly to the equivalent parts in Figure 1 where this is applicable.
In Figure 2 the metal washer 1 is resiliently and grippingly engaged around its outer periphery 14 by a rib 15 upstanding from the outer edge of the plastics liner 2.
Alternatively as Shown in Figure 3 the rib 15 may be interrupted to form a series Of lugs 16 which resiliently and grippingly engage the edge of the metal washer in a imilar manner.
In another arrangement the inside edge of the washer ie gripped in a similar manner by a rib formed above the waisted portion 10 in Figure 1 Or this rib may be divided into a series of lugs formed on the head moulded into the liner; Also as shown in Figure 5 the head 9 may be formed with ribs 17 extending along the head above the upper surface of liner 2 substantially parallel to the axis of the latter* These ribs 17 may taper inwardly towards the free end of the perforated head 9» Figure 4 is included to show alternative forms of the portions 7» 18 of the line 2 and it wlia!be appreciated that various combinations of fthe embodiments illustrated ca be used.
In use to secure, for example, a corrugated iron or predrilled asbestos ce ent roofing sheet in position a sealing washer assembly in accordance with this invention is fitted on a roofing screw which is then driven nto position. As the screw is driven inwardly the head 9 of the liner 2 will be squeezed between the head of the screw and the metal washer* This will cause this portion of the liner to deform and be pressed into sealing engagement with the shank of the screw.
The amount of deformation will be limited by the screw head compressing th plastics against the edge or edges of the metal washer* Also the downward pressure applied to the liner will tend to cause the bottom coned portion 7 to press into the predrilled hole, or the hole formed by the screw, to improve the sealing effected by the bottom surface of the liner.
It is considered that a further improvement in effectiveness of sealing may be achieved by tapering the bore 4 through the liner from the head 9 to the bottom of the liner, and if desired b making the smaller diameter portion of lesser diameter than the fixing screw so that it will be stretched by insertion of the fixing screw.
Where the washer assemblies are connected by webs, these webs are onl broken immediately prior to or during use of the washers.
Whether the liners are to be used in combination with domed or flat metal washers the tap surfaces of the liners are preferably made of upwardly domed shape, since the liners are made sufficiently flexible to accommodate themselves to the shape of washers other than domed washers.
This flexibility is achieved by the choice of plastics material from which the washers are made and/or the shaping of the washer. Thus the edge portion of the liner which forms one of the sealing surfaces thereof» and is in the form of skirt 18 may be made thin and accordingly very flexible. This skirt 18 may be cylindrical shape or of frusto*conical shape co-axial with the axis of the liner.
It is generally not necessary to vary the shape of he head of the liner to make it usable with different types of metal washer .;
