Abstract

(1) 1,3,4-Thiadiazole-2-cyanamide and derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new. In (I), R1 = H; R2 = CN; or R1+R2 = =C(SR6)NH2 or =C(NH2)2; R6 = 1-4C alkyl, cyano-(1-4C)alkyl or pyridyl-(1-4C)alkyl. (2) In vitro antiviral method for protecting mammalian cells in culture comprises adding to the culture a cpd. (I) in which either (A) R1 = H; R2 = CN or =CH-NHR3; or R1+R2 = =C(NH2)2 or =CR5-NHR3(1); R3 = COOR4; R3(1) = H or COOR4; R4 = 1-10C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl or Ph, each opt. substd.; R5 = H or SR6; R6 = 1-4C alkyl, cyano-(1-4C)alkyl or pyridyl-(1-4C)alkyl; or (B) as defined for (A) except that R1+R2 = =CR5NHR31 only; and R3, R31 = H or COOR4.
