Abstract

The condensation of ammonium carbonate in the course of a urea synthesis process is carried out by supplying an ammonium carbonate soln. from the low-pressure (2-50 atm) stages of the process and a NH3+CH2+H2O vapour mixt. from the high-pressure (100-300 atm) carbamate decompsn. stage, to a condensation zone in a horizontal tubular heat exchanger under a static pressure difference DELTA P. Compared with the use of conventional vertical condensers, the system avoids the use of complicated liq.-vapour distributors, which can become blocked by carbamate crystn., gives improved heat utilization for steam generation, and eliminates the need for a separate steam separator.
