1488637 N,N - Dimethylhydrazine ASHLAND OIL Inc 17 March 1976 ]19 March 1975] 10750/76 Heading C2C N;N - Dimethylhydrazine is made by (a) reductively alkylating an acid hydrazide of formula in which R represents a C 1-3 alkyl group with formaldehyde at a pH of less than 7À5 to provide the corresponding N,N-dimethyl-2- acylhydrazine and (b) cleaning the above product by the base hydrolysis or the hydrazinolysis thereof to the desired N,N-dimethylhydrazine. In step (a) the reduction is preferably effected by hydrogen in the presence of Pd, Pt, Rh, Ni, Co or Ir as catalyst.
