Abstract

Current supply conductors between electrolytic cells for the prodn. of aluminium are arranged to minimise unwanted magnetic effects. The cells, connected in series, may be side by side or end to end. Conductors of the same cross-section are combined in couples of equal length. All couples are symmetrically positioned with respect to the median vertical longitudinal and/or transverse plane of the individual cells. Vertical conductors join anodes and cathode to a lower plane, below the cells, in which connections are made. Pairs of reverse conductors to the rectifier section lie parallel to the pairs of connections. The layout is effective in reducing magnetic effects, which are serious on modern high current (150-200KA) cells. The symmetry of the arrangement, with conductors of the same cross-section, makes for simple installation, and the lower plane connections keeps the working floor clear, and facilitates cutting out an individual cell for maintenance.
