Abstract
In the manufacture of minocycline, or 7-dimethylamino-6 demethyl-6-deoxytetracycline, the starting intermediate, 6-demethyl-6-deoxytetracycline, before being subjected to the nitration and to the other transformation stages, is protected with an alkyl group both in the 9 position and on the amide function in the 2 position, which is thus monoalkylated. In the final deprotection stage, the protective alkyl groups at both positions are removed.
