Il fermaglio può essere composto di due pezzi distinti incernierati o di un pezzo unico fatto ad U con braccio interno irrobustito da un braccio trasversale a 90°. In tutti i casi la tenuta è effettuata tramite la pressione del tessuto da parte di un perno elastico all'interno di una sede a forma di occhiello aperto o chiuso sul fondo.
