Sono ormai da tempo note le macchine da cucire sia ad uso domestico che ad uso industriale. Il principio di funzionamento è essenzialmente il medesimo per entrambe, salvo il fatto che le macchine ad uso industriale sono comunemente molto più accessoriate, tecnologicamente più avanzate ed hanno una resa più elevata rispetto a quelle domestiche.
