USO DI UNA COMPOSIZIONE PENETRANTE PER IL TRATTAMENTO USE OF A PENETRANT COMPOSITION FOR TREATMENT

COLORANTE DI MATERIALI LAPIDEI DYE OF STONE MATERIALS

Campo Tecnico dell’Invenzione Technical Field of Invention

The present invention relates to the use of a composition, endowed with good penetrating capacity and comprising at least one coloring substance, for the treatment of the surface of stone materials in general, such as, by way of non-limiting example, granites, stones, sandstones, marbles , quartzites, onyxes, lapis lazuli.

Said penetrating composition has proved to be particularly useful for restoring the natural color and / or for imparting, in a reproducible and permanent way, the desired color to slabs of various thicknesses of said stone materials; in particular, to slabs obtained from more or less porous materials, such as, for example, granite, stone, sandstone, marble, quartzite, onyx, lapis lazuli.

Descrizione dell’Arte Nota Description of the known art

As is well known in the sector, stone materials are usually purchased in blocks and, subsequently, divided into slabs of different thickness through the operation of sawing. By way of example only, absolutely not limiting the wide scope of the invention, the aforementioned stone materials to be divided into slabs are preferably selected from materials having different degrees of porosity, such as: granite, stones of various types and origins, sandstones, marbles , quartzites, onyxes, lapis lazuli and so on.

The sawing of the stone material is carried out with completely conventional methods and equipment known in the sector, after which, the slabs thus obtained are subjected to polishing, and possibly to further optional treatments (antiquing, bush hammering and so on), to depending on the final aspect you want to give the material.

Unfortunately, it often occurs that, for reasons that cannot be predicted a priori and, substantially, attributable to the different points of extraction of the material, the real colors of the materials sawn and / or polished and / or further treated do not correspond to those desired or theoretically presumed by the external appearance of the starting stone block.

As a consequence of this, often the slabs obtained can no longer be put on the market, as they are equipped with colors, or shades of color, which have no commercial interest, because they are not sufficiently homogeneous or fashionable. By way of example only, it has often happened that a slab obtained from a block of granite externally black, was actually characterized inside by a greyish color, which proved to be completely unsuitable for the desired application.

In cases like these, it has turned out that, due to the impossibility of being able to conveniently market the finished product, whoever purchased the stone block or blocks recorded a significant economic loss in operation. In fact, this loss does not relate only to the initial cost of the stone block itself, but also to the costs incurred to carry out subsequent operations, such as sawing and polishing.

Attempts to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks by regenerating or even modifying the resulting unwanted, or unusable, final colors have already been made.

Thus, just to give an example, we tried to restore the color of black granite slabs which, after polishing, had the defect that their surfaces did not have the natural black color, but were gray. To obtain this result, the sheets were subjected to a surface treatment, respectively, with naphtha, burnt diesel engine oil, silicone oil, paraffin oil, various paints or their mixtures. However, after a short time (a few months) of exposure outdoors, to the action of atmospheric agents, the surfaces of the slabs, in addition to losing more or less quickly the color given to them by the treatments mentioned above, had assumed a series of reflections intense green and / or brown, thus making the attempt at coloring completely useless. In addition, their surfaces remained on average greasy to the touch.

Therefore, the known coloring treatments (such as those mentioned above) have not proved capable of providing a completely satisfactory solution to the drawbacks described above, both because it is not possible to easily and acceptably reproduce the desired color tone, and, above all, because this color does not show the indispensable resistance over time. In fact, the color tends to fade or change significantly in a relatively short time, in particular, when the material is used outdoors and, therefore, remains in direct contact with the sun and other atmospheric agents (rain, wind, bad weather). .

Problema Tecnico Technical problem

Therefore, the need to be able to regenerate and / or modify as desired, in a simple, economical, reproducible and stable way, preferably, permanent or almost permanent, the natural color of the stone material slabs remains alive and felt in order to make them always completely usable, and therefore, marketable for their use both indoors and outdoors.

The purpose of the present invention is to respond adequately to the need highlighted above.

Sommario dell’Invenzione Summary of the Invention

In fact, the Applicants have now quite unexpectedly found that, by properly treating the surfaces of the slabs of stone material, it is possible to give an adequate response to the technical problem generated by the aforementioned need.

In a further embodiment of the invention, the mixture of colors having the desired tonality is made on site (for example, immediately before use) by mixing together the necessary base dyes, in suitable ratios and quantities, resorting to for example, to the use of a tintometer.

The dye or mixture of dyes will be chosen according to the type of stone material to be colored, its porosity and the final effect to be achieved.

Said dyes are normally used in an overall percentage weight quantity ranging from 0.5% to 99%, with respect to the total weight of the composition; preferably, in an overall percentage weight quantity of between 1% and 70%; more preferably, in an overall percentage weight quantity ranging from 2% to 80%; even more preferably, in an overall weight percentage of between 2% and 75%.

The coloring substance, or the mixture of coloring substances according to the invention, is normally dissolved or suspended in a suitable solvent (or mixture of solvents), and / or carrier agent that ensure its distribution and optimal absorption on the stone surface. to be treated, that is the optimal penetration into the pores of the material.

The choice of the most appropriate solvent and / or carrier, as well as the quantity of dye, is made on a case-by-case basis by the expert in the sector, on the basis of his / her knowledge; substantially, depending on the type of stone material, its porosity, its thickness and the type of processing to which said material has been subjected (for example, whether or not the slab has already been subjected to polishing or other types of processing).

Preferably, but not exclusively, the solvent is selected from the group comprising the following families of solvents: water, alcohols (for example, methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, tert-butyl and so on), acetates ( methyl, ethyl, amyl, isoamyl and so on), aliphatic (pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, petroleum ether), aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylenes and their derivatives), ketones (acetone, methyl- ethyl ketone, terbutylmethyl ketone, and so on), phthalates and isophthalates, glycols (glycol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dibutyl glycol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol and so on), paraffins, isoparaffins and their appropriate mixtures.

The total percentage weight of the solvent or mixture of solvents is between 99.5% and 1%, with respect to the total weight of the composition; preferably, it is comprised between 98% and 20%; more preferably, it ranges from 98% to 25%.

The penetrating composition according to the invention can further comprise one or more suitable additional ingredients in order to improve the characteristics of absorption / penetration in the pores of the stone material and / or resistance to time and to the action of atmospheric agents.

By way of an absolutely non-limiting example, said additional ingredients are preferably selected from the group comprising: xylene isomers and their mixtures, natural or synthetic resins, tetra-ethyl silicate, natural or synthetic polymers.

Said additional ingredients are preferably present in an overall percentage weight quantity ranging from 0% to the complement to 100%, relative to the total weight of the composition.

Thanks to the use of the penetrating composition according to the invention, described above, it was possible to regenerate or even completely change the color of the surfaces of the slabs of stone material, thus restoring the original color to the slabs, or coloring them with different and new shades. .

With the composition according to the invention it has been possible to create an infinite series of color shades for the surface treatment of stone slabs of different types and thicknesses, from the thinnest to the thickest.

The slabs can be advantageously treated immediately after sawing, ie before polishing (rough surface). Similarly, the treatment can be carried out both during polishing (smooth surface) and at the end of polishing (glossy surface).

As previously described, the penetrating-coloring treatment of the present invention can be carried out, in a completely reproducible way and with stable results over time, on slabs of different types and thicknesses, even if the surfaces have already been previously subjected to artificial treatments such as sanding, antiquing, bush hammering and brushing.

For example, the above penetrating composition has the ability to penetrate the quartz and mica layers visible on the surfaces of the slabs.

As for the process for treating the slabs of stone material, the penetrating composition of the invention can be applied on the surface of the slabs both horizontally and vertically, with mechanical or manual support. The application can be carried out in a conventional way, by brush, by spraying, by nebulizer, by nebulizing with air gun, by mechanical roller, by roller with manual application in synthetic or natural, by pad with organic or polyurethane sponge, in tub by immersion, by cold or by raising temperatures, depending on the needs and machinery available for the application of the composition and the type and size of the sheet to be treated.

Preferably, the application is carried out by brush, by roller, or by spray, with or without the use of machinery suitable for the purpose.

After the application of the penetrating composition of the invention, the treated sheets are subjected to a drying step, at a temperature ranging from room temperature to about 80 ° C; preferably, comprised from 30 ° C to 70 °; more preferably, ranging from about 40 ° C to about 60 ° C.

In a preferred embodiment, said drying step is carried out in suitable rooms heated to the desired temperature, for example in ventilated ovens.

In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the process for treating the slabs of stone material comprises a further step in which the slabs to be treated are previously subjected to dehumidification, so as to improve the penetration of the composition into the pores of the material.

Said dehumidification step is preferably carried out in suitable heated environments, for example in ventilated ovens, at a temperature ranging from about 40 ° C to about 80 ° C. Advantageously, the times of final drying of the plates first subjected to dehumidification and then treated with the penetrating composition of the invention were significantly lower than those of the plates not subjected to dehumidification. The final color was also brighter and more â € œnaturalâ €.

In all cases, it was however advantageously possible to restore the original color of the block to the slab treated in this way, or, equally advantageously, it was possible to give it the desired color.

Regardless of the appearance and initial state of the plate, it was possible, in a completely unexpected way, to obtain an excellent reproducibility of the color tone given to the plate itself.

Equally unexpectedly, it has been verified that the treatment according to the invention has absolutely not altered or modified the morphology and external appearance of the material; the original veins and shades of the material have not been altered, â € œcoveredâ € or opacified. Therefore, advantageously, the treatment according to the invention also confers to the treated material a valuable â € œtransparencyâ € effect.

This effect is absolutely not obtainable with the known methods of treating the slabs of stone materials illustrated in the initial part of the description, where it is not possible to avoid an opacifying covering / varnishing that affects a good part of the slab, if not all.

In an even more unexpected way, it has also been verified that the color tone given to the slab has more than excellent resistance to the sun and to atmospheric agents in general.

In fact, the series of shades of color conferred on the sheet has shown to have a resistance to discoloration caused by the sun and atmospheric agents, on average ranging from WS 6 (very good) to WS 9 (out of the ordinary), in terms of Light fastness ( Wool Scale), according to ISO 2835 (DIN 16525). Preferably, the resistance to discoloration caused by the sun and atmospheric agents is on average included from WS 6 (very good) to WS 8 (more than excellent); more preferably, from WS 7 (excellent) to WS 8 (more than excellent).

Consequently, the slabs of stone material resulting from the treatment with the above penetrating composition, in accordance with what has been described above, are also part of the present invention. Preferably, the slabs thus treated, consisting of the porous stone material illustrated in the previous description and claimed in the attached claim, form part of the present invention.

Just as an example, which is absolutely not limiting of the wide application potential of the invention, below is the result of a test carried out on a slab of Indian granite (color, Indian black) which, after polishing, appeared gray instead of with its natural black color. The plate was surface treated (by spray) with a penetrating composition according to the invention comprising the desired Indian black coloring substance. In said composition, the Indian black dye is present in a percentage weight quantity of 55%, with respect to the total weight of the composition, while the remaining 45% by weight is represented by the solvent (dibutylglycol) in which the dye itself was dissolved. After the application of the composition and the evaporation of the solvent, the sheet had regained its natural black color, keeping the original shades, veins and general external appearance clearly evident. The same slab was then left exposed outdoors for about eight months, thus suffering the aggression of atmospheric agents. After this time it was noted that the surface treated with the composition had undergone a color degradation equal to that of an untreated slab of the same type of stone material and furthermore the color applied had not undergone any type of alteration in the tonality of the color. In comparison, a section of the same plate, treated with naphtha, showed that, after the same period of time, the surfaces of the plate, as well as having significantly lost color, had also taken on ugly green and brown reflections.
