A process for the extraction of metallic impurities from unpurified phosphoric acid by solvent extraction employing an organic extractant phase containing an organic sulphonic acid in its H+ form. after the extraction step and separation of the extractant phase and phosphoric acid, residual P2O5 values are selectively recovered from the extractant phase by washing the extractant phase with dilute equeous phosphoric acid. the sulphonic acid in the extractant phase can be regenerated to its H+ form with a mineral acid and recycled
