Description: TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a bias circuit for an avalanche photodiode (hereinafter, referred to as an APD) having no negative feedback circuit for optical input power, and particularly to a circuit for controlling the ambient temperature. The present invention relates to an APD bias circuit that generates a bias voltage corresponding to the temperature dependency of the breakdown voltage of an APD when the APD bias voltage changes. (2) Figure 1 prior art and its problem is that determined by the ambient temperature T to the parameters of the relationship between the bias voltage V b and the multiplication factor M of the APD. AP
If the bias voltage of D is fixed, when the ambient temperature T changes, the multiplication factor M greatly changes, and when this is applied to the optical receiver, the SNR is greatly deteriorated according to the temperature change. In order to maintain good SNR characteristics even when the temperature changes, it is necessary to control the bias voltage of the APD according to the temperature change. FIG. 2 shows the configuration of a conventional APD bias circuit. 1 is A
PD, 2 is a resistor, 3 is a thermistor having a negative temperature coefficient, 4
Is a high voltage generation circuit, 5 is an output terminal, and 6 is a load resistance. In this configuration, the output voltage of the high voltage generation circuit 4 is divided by the thermistor 3 and the resistor 2, and the voltage obtained by subtracting the voltage drop at the load resistor 6 from the voltage across the resistor 2 becomes the bias voltage of the APD1. In this configuration, for example, when the ambient temperature increases, the resistance of the thermistor 3 decreases, so that the voltage across the resistor 2 increases, and the bias voltage of the APD 1 increases in a direction to suppress the change in the multiplication factor M. However, in this configuration, it is actually difficult to control the multiplication factor M over a wide temperature range, and the multiplication factor becomes a value greatly different from a predetermined value near the maximum temperature or the minimum temperature in the operating temperature range. was there. (3) Object of the invention The present invention has been made in view of the above points,
It is characterized by using a Wheatstone bridge circuit with a thermistor for the temperature compensation circuit of the D bias method.
An object of the present invention is to provide an APD bias circuit capable of obtaining good SNR characteristics over a wide temperature range. (4) Structure of the Invention FIG. 3 shows an embodiment of the APD bias circuit according to the present invention. 7 is a high voltage generating circuit, and the temperature compensating circuit 8 is
It comprises a voltage adding circuit section 9, a constant voltage generating circuit section 10, and a temperature compensation voltage generating circuit section 11. Temperature compensation voltage generator
11 is a differential buffer amplifier 12, a thermistor 13, a resistor 14,1
5 and 16 and a constant voltage source 17. Hereinafter, the operation will be described with reference to FIG. In the temperature compensation voltage generating circuit section 11, the resistors 11, 15, 16 and the thermistor 13
The output from the Wheatstone bridge is input to the voltage adding circuit unit 9 via the differential buffer amplifier 12, and the voltage is added to the output voltage of the constant voltage generating circuit unit 10. The output of the voltage adding circuit 9 is input to the high voltage generating circuit 7 as a control voltage, and the output voltage is applied to the APD 1 as a bias voltage. In this case, the following APD bias characteristics can be obtained. The output voltage V out of the temperature compensation voltage generation circuit 11 using a Wheatstone bridge can be expressed by the following equation. However, R 13, R 14, R 15, R 16: the resistor 13, resistor 14, resistor 15, the resistance value of the resistor 16 V b: the voltage of the low voltage source 17. Here, ambient temperatures T 1 , T 2 , T 3 (degrees K), (T 1 > T 2 >
The resistance value of the thermistor 13 at T 3 ) is R
13 (T 1 ), R 13 (T 2 ), R 13 (T 3 )
Set R 14 to the value shown in the following equation (2). The resistance value R of the thermistor 13 at the ambient temperature T
13 (T) can be represented by the following equation (3). R 13 (T) = R 0 exp [B (1 / T−1T 0 )] (3) where T 0 : reference temperature (273 degrees K) R 0 : reference temperature T 0 of thermistor 13 (273) The resistance value B at the degree K) is a constant. At this time, FIG. 4 shows the temperature characteristics of the output voltage V out obtained from the equation (1). Because of the non-linearity of the resistance of the thermistor expressed by the equation (3) with respect to the ambient temperature, the output voltage
Vout has an S-shaped curve with respect to temperature as shown in FIG. This S-shaped curve intersects with the proportional straight line shown by the dotted line at each temperature (T 1 , T 2 , T 3 ) used in the equation (2) for determining R 14 , and T 2 is the center intersection. Points. In the formula (2), T 1 , T 2 , and T 3 are arbitrarily set with respect to the temperature of the S-shaped curve and the temperature range in which the S-shaped curve is drawn because R 14 can be freely selected within a positive range. Can be. In addition, resistance 15
The DC deviation of the output voltage Vout is determined by the combination of the resistor 16 and the resistor 16. That is, the center voltage of the output voltage V out and the resistor R 15 by the combination of the values of the resistor R 16 can be set to any value. According to the present invention, the S-shaped characteristic as shown by the solid line in FIG.
This is used for the characteristics of the temperature compensation circuit of the D bias circuit. A for securing the maximum SNR under the condition of constant received light power
The multiplication factor of PD changes with temperature. The bias voltage of the APD for setting the multiplication factor of the APD to the optimum value (M OPT ) for maximizing the SNR draws a substantially quadratic curve with respect to the temperature. From this, by setting the control voltage of the high-voltage generating circuit to a voltage having an S-curve characteristic as shown in FIG. 4, it is possible to control the APD multiplication factor to a value substantially matching MOPT. Become. In Figure 4, the minimum operating temperature of T 4, a T 3 is set to the maximum value, indicating the multiplication factor characteristic of the APD of case where the APD bias circuit of FIG. 3 in FIG. 5. In FIG. 5, 1
8 is a gain characteristic obtained from the present invention, 19 is an APD optimum gain characteristic maximizing the SNR, and 20 is a gain characteristic of FIG. 1 according to a conventional configuration example. Compared with the characteristic 20, the characteristic 18 substantially coincides with the optimum multiplication factor, and it can be seen that the present invention can realize an APD bias circuit that obtains the optimum multiplication factor with respect to temperature. Further, since the S-shaped curve in FIG. 4 can be set arbitrarily with respect to the temperature, the following application is also possible. FIG. 6 shows a change in the SNR characteristic with respect to the multiplication factor M of the APD in the optical transmission system. That is, the deterioration of the SNR after the multiplication factor is set to the maximum value (M OPT ) that maximizes the SNR is large as the M decreases and small as the M increases. As a result, when the temperature changes from the set temperature, controlling the APD bias voltage so that M always increases results in stable operation as SNR characteristics. Minimum value of FIG. 4 using temperature T 1 of the, the T 2 is set to the maximum value, indicating the multiplication factor characteristic when applied to an embodiment of the present invention shown in FIG. 3 in FIG. 7. In this figure, the operating temperature range
The multiplication factor of the APD does not become smaller than the value at the set temperature, and it can be seen that the desired characteristics are obtained. (5) Effects of the Invention As described above, according to the present invention, it is possible to optimally control the APD multiplication factor over a wide temperature range with a simple circuit, and to control the light in a place where the ambient temperature changes drastically. When operating the receiver, a particularly great effect can be expected.
