Description
本発明は、マルチメディア・プログラムのキャプチャ、オーサリングおよび再生のためのコンピュータ・システム、ならびに分散型計算機システムに関するものである。
コンピュータ・ネットワークを通じてデータの分散使用に対応するいくつかのコンピュータ・システム・アーキテクチャがある。これらのコンピュータ・アーキテクチャは、社内イントラネット、分散データベース・アプリケーション、およびビデオ・オン・デマンド・サービスのような用途に用いられている。
(概要)
コンピュータ・ネットワークを用いて、多数のアプリケーションと接続してある多数の記憶装置上にデータをランダムに分散する。データをセグメントに分割する。各セグメントを記憶装置の1つに格納する。また、1つ以上のセグメントに基づく冗長情報も、基本となるセグメントとは異なる記憶装置上に格納する。冗長情報は、各セグメントのコピーとすればよく、あるいは2つ以上のセグメントに対して行なう排他的OR演算によって計算してもよい。セグメントまたは冗長情報を格納した各記憶装置の選択はランダムまたは疑似ランダムであり、他のデータ・セグメントが格納されている記憶装置とは独立することができる。冗長情報が2つ以上のセグメントに基づく場合、セグメントの各々を異なる記憶装置上に格納する。

一例として、100個の記憶装置を有し、各々50ギガバイトの容量を有するシステムでは、MTTRが1時間、MTBFが1000時間即ち6週間の場合、115年で二重故障不良が発生する確度となる。MTTRが24時間に増大すると、4.8年で二重故障不良が発生する確度となる。

例えば、10個の記憶装置の内1つが故障したために50ギガバイトのストレージへのアクセスが失われた場合、n=10記憶装置、単位帯域幅b=10MB/秒とすると、(n−1)=9および(b/2)=5となる。したがって、他に負荷がなければ、復元には約20分を要する。この絶対復元速度は、通常、クライアントへの変動再生負荷の逆数として減少する。例えば、50%負荷の場合、入力時間は200%増大する。呼び出されると、再分散タスクは速いレートで実行することができ、多元記憶装置チェッカボードを多数の記憶装置に切り替えるが、再入力アクティビティは適宜クライアント・ファイル・サービス要求にしたがって行われる。実際の影響は、故障した記憶装置によって記憶装置の全帯域幅に多少の損失が出る程度である。復元のためのファイル選択の優先順位を決定することにより、最も重要なファイルを真っ先に復元することを保証する。

- 1つ以上のクライアント・システムをデータにアクセスできるようにする分散データ記憶システムであって、
前記データを格納するための複数の独立の記憶装置を備え、
前記データは、前記複数の記憶装置にファイルで格納され、各ファイルは、データの複数のセグメントを含み、各セグメントは識別子を有し、各々のファイルの各セグメントが、前記複数の記憶装置のうちの少なくとも2つの記憶装置に格納され、
各記憶装置は、前記記憶装置に格納された各セグメントの前記識別子を、前記記憶装置上の各セグメントのロケーションと関連付ける第1の情報を維持するための手段を備え、
