Description

本発明は基板上に形成された埋め込み型光導波路による光回路に関し、より詳細には、温度変化に対して光回路の特性変化を補償する温度補償構造を有する光回路に関する。
波長多重光通信の更なる大容量化に伴い、これを支える光波長合分波回路や光スイッチ回路などの石英系平面光波回路に関する研究開発が盛んに行われている。多くの場合、これら光回路の構成要素には光路長の異なる複数の光信号経路と合分波素子が含まれ、光波の干渉を利用した波長合分波及びスイッチング機能を実現している。
光波の干渉特性は信号経路間の光路長差に依存しており、光路長を決定する実効屈折率は温度依存性を有するため、従来は温度変化に対して透過特性を一定に保持するために、温度変化による実効屈折率の変化が、導波路材料とは異なる変化傾向を有する温度補償材料を、導波路の溝に充填していた。
従来技術では、温度補償材料を充填した溝の深さは一定であり、溝の幅と温度補償材料の種類を変更することで、温度補償特性を調節していた(特許文献1及び非特許文献1)。しかし、溝がコア層を貫通した形状をなす場合においては、特に高温又は低温環境においてコア層と溝との界面で光の散乱が生じるため、光損失が増大する要因となっていた。

経路長が異なる複数の導波路と合分波構造を有する従来のアサーマル(ATHERMAL:温度無依存化、熱的補償)光回路においては、信号波長帯での使用可能温度領域を広くするために、温度補償材料を充填した溝を導波路に形成していたが、溝の加工形成技術上の制限から光損失を抑えたものを作製するのは困難であった。
また、温度補償特性が温度補償材料の種類と溝の幅のみで決定されていたため、特に高温または低温環境においては導波路クラッドと溝との界面で散乱が生じ、透過光強度の波長依存性を劣化させる等の問題があった。
本発明は、このような問題点を解決するためになされたものであり、温度補償特性の微細な調整を可能とする光回路構造を提供することを目的とする。
本発明では、導波路を伝搬する光波を温度補償構造へ断熱的に遷移させ、低損失かつ透過特性の劣化が少ない温度補償構造を有する光回路を提供する。さらに、温度補償構造を導波路のコアから所定の距離だけ離して設置することで、少なくともコアからの距離と溝の幅のパラメータを用いて、温度補償特性の微細な調整を可能とする光回路構造を提供する。
このような目的を達成するために、本発明の一実施形態は、温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造を有する光導波路を備えた光回路であって、光導波路を伝搬する光波を、温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造へ断熱的に遷移させる断熱遷移構造を有することを特徴とする。
以上記載した本発明の光回路の温度補償構造によれば、光損失を低減し、温度補償特性の微細な調整が可能な光回路構造を提供することができる。

以下、図面を参照しながら本発明の実施形態について詳細に説明する。
<基本構造>
図1は、本発明の実施形態の光回路の温度補償構造の概念を示す基本構造を説明する上面図(a)と、コアを通過する伝搬光に沿った長手方向の基板断面図(b)である。
図1(a)の上面図で、光回路のチップの上部クラッド102に埋め込まれたコア101の例えば左端から入射した伝搬光は、コア101の上部クラッド102に設けられた温度補償構造103の下を取り、温度補償されて右端側に出射する。
図1(b)の基板断面図に示すように、基板105上で上部クラッド102と下部クラッド104の間に埋め込まれたコア101が形成されて、光回路の光導波路を構成している。上部クラッド102の上面側に形成された溝(窪み、ウェル)に温度補償材料を埋め込んで、温度補償構造103が形成されている。
温度補償構造103の入射側および出射側には、温度補償材料の厚みが断熱的(実効屈折率の急激な変化なく連続的な)変化となるよう、入射側で徐々に厚みが厚くなり、また出射側で徐々に厚みが薄くなるテーパ部107が、断熱遷移構造として形成されている。テーパ部107の厚み変化は直線的に変化するものを例示しているが、これに限らず光損失を生じない断熱条件を満たす連続的な変化であれば良い。この断熱遷移構造で、温度補償構造103による光の損失を抑えることができる。温度補償構造103の中央部(温度補償部)108では、温度補償材料の厚みはほぼ一定に形成されており、コア101と温度補償材料の間の上部クラッド102も一定の厚みを有している。この部分の上部クラッド102の厚みを調整することで、温度補償特性を細かく調整することができる。
本発明では、光回路の光導波路を伝搬する光波を、温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造へ断熱的に遷移させる断熱遷移構造を有することで、温度補償特性を細かく調整可能とするとともに、光の損失を抑えることができる。
<実施形態1>
本発明の実施形態1を示す図2は、第1のアーム210および第2のアーム220を有するマッハツェンダ干渉計を含む光回路について、温度補償構造を介して透過特性の温度依存性を補償する態様を示す図である。図2を用いて本実施形態における温度補償について説明する。
図2(a)において、マッハツェンダ干渉計は、入射側で光路長の短い第1のアーム210と光路長の長い第2のアーム220に分岐して、出射側で合波する構造を有する。このとき、環境温度の変化に起因する実効屈折率変化による光位相変化量は、第2のアームの方が大きい値をとるため、温度補償構造203は第2のアーム220の途中に作製される。
図2の(b)は第2のアーム220の温度補償構造203の上面拡大図であり、図2(c)は長手方向の基板断面拡大図であり、図1の(a)、(b)に対応する。図2(b)および(c)に示すように、基板(不図示)上で上部クラッド202と下部クラッド204の間に埋め込まれたコア201が形成されて、光回路の光導波路を構成している。上部クラッド202の上面側に形成された溝(窪み、ウェル)に温度補償材料を埋め込んで、温度補償構造203が形成されている。
図2(c)の長手方向基板段面図において、温度補償構造203の温度補償材料の厚みが一定となる中央部208の導波方向の長さを作用長Lcom、テーパ部207の長さをLtapとしている。また、温度補償構造203の中央部208の温度補償材料の底面から上部クラッド202とコア201の境界面までの上部クラッド202の厚みを距離h2(x)、コア201の厚みをh1としている。ただし、xは光伝搬方向(図2(c)の左
右、光は左から右へ伝搬すると仮定する)の座標である。
図2(c)に示すように、関数h2(x)は左の入射側のテーパ部207のLcomの区間において、上部クラッド202の厚みから徐々に連続的に断熱的に減少し、中央部208で最小値となり、長さLcomの区間にわたり、最小値h2となる。そして光が右の出射側のテーパ部207のLtapの区間に入ると、h2(x)は逆の変化をして徐々に連
続的に断熱的に増加する。伝搬光はこのような断熱遷移構造による断熱的な光の変化のおかげで、光エネルギーの損失が最小限に抑えられ、温度補償構造による光のロスが抑えられると共に、LcomやLtap、h2などの構造パラメータの調整により温度補償特性の
微小な調整が可能となる。
図3(a)には、光回路の温度補償構造の短手方向の(光導波方向に垂直な面の)基板断面図を示す。図3の左右方向は、図2(a)のy軸方向にあたる。基板205上で上部クラッド202と下部クラッド204に埋め込まれたコア201が形成されて、上部クラッドの上面側に温度補償構造203が形成されている。
温度補償構造203は温度補償材料が充填された溝で構成され、温度補償材料には単位温度変化あたりの屈折率変化量dn/dTが、コア及びクラッド材料に対して異符号かつ絶対値の大きい材料が選択されている。
ここで、溝の深さはテーパ部207と中央部208の温度補償部で異なり、テーパ部207においてはコア201と温度補償材料との間の距離h2(x)はx軸方向に断熱的に変化(光損失がない連続的な変化)し、温度補償部の中央部208では一定であることを特徴とする。コアと温度補償材料との距離h2(x)を設計することで、単位長さあたりの位相シフト補償量を微小に調節できる。
クラッド層が十分に厚い条件において、埋め込み型光導波路における実効屈折率nef fの単位温度あたり変化量dneff/dTは、以下の(式1)で示すことができる。

ここで、Tは環境温度、ncoreはコアの屈折率、ncladはクラッドの屈折率、h1はコアの高さ、wはコアの幅、αh1はh1の線膨張係数、αwはw(幅方向)の線膨張係数を示している。
第2のアームに作製した温度補償構造の温度補償部における実効屈折率neffの単位温度変化あたり補償量dncom/dTは、以下の(式2)で示すことができる。

ここで、Tは環境温度、nmは温度補償材料の屈折率、h2はコアと温度補償構造との距離、wはコアの幅、αh2はh2の線膨張係数を示している。また、通常h2は正の値をとるが、単位伝搬長あたりの温度補償効果を高めることを目的として、h2を負の値としてもよい。h2の負の値は、例えば温度補償構造203の溝を深くして溝の底で上部クラッド202の部分をなくしてコア201の厚さを削る、あるいはコア201の幅を削ることで実現できる。この場合、コア201は、厚さ又は幅が所定の値だけ減少し、温度補償材料と接していてもよい。h2が負の値をとる場合、コアの高さh1’をh1+h2とすると、単位温度変化あたり補償量dncom/dTは、以下の(式3)で示すことができる。

テーパ部207において(式2)又は(式3)の第2項はh2が伝搬軸(本実施形態ではx軸)に沿って断熱的に変化するため、単位温度変化あたり位相シフト補償量Δφta pは、以下の(式4)又は(式5)で示すことができる。

ここで、Ltapはテーパ部207の長さ、k0は真空中の波数である。また、光信号を温度補償部へ低損失に遷移させる目的から、通常テーパ部における実効屈折率変化量は伝搬長1μmあたり0.1以下に設定する。
環境温度Tの変化が第1のアームと第2のアームとの光路長差ΔLに対して与える位相シフト変化量を補償するように、実効屈折率の補償量及び構造パラメータを、以下の(式6)の条件式が成り立つように設定する。

(式6)について、回路設計に用いた基準環境温度をT0としたとき、高次(N次まで)の温度特性を補償するように、以下の(式7)の条件式が成り立つように構造を設計してもよい。

ここで、Ai、Bi、Ciはi次の温度特性および温度補償に対応する定数である。
実施形態1では基板の材料としてSiを用いており、αwは基板の熱膨張の影響を受ける場合がある。また、実施形態1において光導波路はSiO2から成り、屈折率調整材料を添加することでコアとクラッドの屈折率差Δを約1%としている。実施形態1では、膜厚方向距離h2及び幅方向距離h3、h4は、通常0.5μm以下の値であり、またh2、h3、h4が負の値をとる場合、すなわち伝搬モードが存在する限りコアの高さh1’等の値に下限はない。温度補償材料の屈折率は、回路設計時に基準とした温度でクラッドと同じ値となるように調整されることを特徴とする。これは使用環境の温度に加えて、コアとクラッドの屈折率差が高くなるほど散乱が生じ、透過光強度の波長依存性が劣化するからである。コアとクラッドの屈折率差を小さくすることで、透過光強度の波長依存性の劣化を低減することが可能となる。
上記の構造は、通常の光回路プロセスで作製後、局所エッチング装置等で上部クラッドの厚さ分布を調節することで実現可能である。
図3(b)には、本実施形態1において導波路の側面まで温度補償材料を充填した場合における、温度補償構造の短手方向の(光導波方向に垂直な面の)基板断面図を示す。短手方向の基板断面図3(b)において、コア301は上部クラッド302および下部クラッド304に囲まれて基板305の上に形成され、さらに上面と側面を温度補償材料で覆われて温度補償構造303を形成し、さらに、上部302クラッド302および下部クラッド304に埋め込まれた形となっている。
ここで、コアと温度補償材料との膜厚方向距離h2及び幅方向距離h3、h4はテーパ部と温度補償部で値が異なり、テーパ部においては導波路パターンに沿って断熱的に変化し、温度補償部では一定であることを特徴とする。また、幅方向距離は通常左右対称でありh3=h4を満たすが、光回路パターン設計自由度の担保等が求められる場合は、異なる値を設定してもよい。コアと温度補償材料との膜厚方向距離h2及び幅方向距離h3、h4(構造パラメータと総称する)を設計することで、偏光モード毎の単位長さあたり位相シフト補償量をさらに微小に調節できる。
本実施例において導波路断面が図3(b)の構造である場合、第2のアームに作製した温度補償構造の温度補償部における実効屈折率neffの単位温度変化あたり補償量dncom/dTは、以下の(式8)で示すことができる。

図4には、光信号を温度補償部へ断熱的に遷移させる構造(断熱遷移構造)として、上述したテーパ構造に替えて、セグメント(i番目のセグメントの溝幅がlsegiの、狭い溝構造)を複数、連続して有するセグメント構造407を用いる例を示す。図4(a)および(b)に示すように、基板405上で上部クラッド402と下部クラッド404の間に埋め込まれたコア401が形成されて、光回路の光導波路を構成している。上部クラッド402の上面側に形成された溝(窪み、ウェル)に温度補償材料を埋め込んで、温度補償構造403が形成されている。温度補償構造403は、中央部408に両側にセグメント構造407が形成されている。中央部408は、中央部108または208に相当する。セグメント構造407内のセグメントから次のセグメントまでの周期(セグメントの溝幅と次の導波路部分の幅を含む)を、ピッチpsegiとする。
図4(b)の基板断面図に示すように、セグメント構造407では、コアとセグメントとの間の厚み方向の距離h2は一定であり、各セグメントの幅とピッチの比(いわゆるデューティ比lsegi/psegi)が光伝搬軸x方向に沿って断熱的に変化していることを特徴とする。
テーパ構造を用いた場合と同様に、光信号を温度補償部へ低損失に遷移させる目的から、通常セグメント部における実効屈折率変化量は伝搬長1μmあたり0.1以下に設定する。
断熱的な変化とするため、各セグメントの幅とピッチの比(デューティ比)を構造パラメータとして、平均的な実効屈折率の急激な変化がなく連続的な断熱的変化となるように設定する。
セグメント構造407の全体の長さLsegは、セグメントの数Nとi番目のセグメントのピッチpiを決定することで以下の(式10)で示すことができる。

また、セグメント構造における単位温度変化あたり位相シフト補償量Δφsegは、以下の(式11)で示すことができる。

ここで、lsegiはi番目のセグメントの長さを示している。セグメント構造の設計パラメータ決定式は、(式4)から(式6)のφtapとLtapを、それぞれφsegとLsegに置き換えることで成り立つ。
<実施形態2>
実施形態2は、図5に示す1以上の入力導波路が接続されたスラブ導波路510及び1以上の出力導波路が接続されたスラブ導波路520並びにこれらの2つのスラブ導波路を接続するM本のアレイ導波路501を有するアレイ導波路回折格子型波長合分波回路(AWG)500について、光回路構造を介して透過特性の温度依存性を補償する態様である。図5(a)の平面図と、アレイ導波路501の中央部における基板断面図5(b)を用いて本実施形態2における温度補償について説明する。AWG500は、基板505上で上部クラッド502と下部クラッド504に埋め込まれた複数のアレイ導波路501のコアが形成されて、上部クラッド502の上面側に温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造503が形成されている。
図5において、アレイ導波路501は長さがΔLずつ異なるM本の導波路を有する。このとき、環境温度の変化に起因する実効屈折率変化による光位相変化量は、曲率半径の大きいアレイ導波路の方が大きい値をとるため、温度補償構造503は各アレイ導波路に対応した補償量を与える形状が求められる。
図5(a)の平面図では温度補償構造503として、上に開いた扇形の平面形状を例示するが、実際の形状は必要とする補償量に応じて変化する。温度補償構造503の中央部の断面Vb-Vbにおける基板断面図を図5(b)に示す。温度補償構造503とアレイ導波路501のコアの間の厚み方向の距離の関数は、h2(x、y)のように図5(a)の平面座標で決まることに留意されたい。
図6には、実施形態2の別例における光回路構造の平面図(a)と断面図(b)を示す。本例の光回路構造は、図5を参照して説明したAWGが有するスラブ導波路510または520に温度補償構造を設けた光回路構想である。スラブ導波路610または620は、基板605上で上部クラッド層602と下部クラッド層604に埋め込まれたスラブ導波路610のコア層601が形成されて、上部クラッド層602の上面側に温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造603が形成されている。スラブ導波路610および620はそれぞれ、図5のスラブ導波路510および520に対応する。スラブ導波路610(または620)のコア層601は、1以上の入力導波路(出力導波路)及びアレイ導波路のコア層601と接続されている。図6(b)は、入力導波路とアレイ導波路のうちの1つとを結ぶ断面線(図6(a)に示す点線)における断面図である。図6(b)の断面図に示すように、温度補償構造603は、AWGのスラブ導波路610または620の上部クラッド層602に形成された溝に温度補償材料が充填されて設けられている。
図6(a)の平面図に示すように、温度補償構造603の溝は、スラブ導波路610または620のアレイ導波路に至る光経路上に、例示的に湾曲した三角形状で示されている。図6(b)の断面図に示すように、温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造603とコア層601との間の上部クラッド層602の厚みは、光経路の光伝搬方向に沿って長さLc omの区間に渡り一定の厚みになるように形成され、前後の長さL1,L2の区間は断熱遷移構造部として例えばテーパをなすように形成されている。
実施形態2でも実施形態1と同様に、温度補償構造603に充填される温度補償材料は、単位温度変化あたりの屈折率変化量dn/dTがコア及びクラッド材料に対して異符号かつ絶対値の大きい材料が選択されている。さらに、実施形態1と同様に温度補償構造603は、断熱遷移構造としてテーパ部に替えてセグメント部を温度補償構造603の前後に設けることもできる。スラブ導波路610または620のコア層601と温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造603との距離h2を設計することで、単位長さあたりの位相シフト補償量を微小に調節できる。
アレイ導波路回折格子の中心出力ポートの透過中心波長λ0は以下の(式12)で決定される。

ここで、mは回折次数、ΔTはT-T0を示す。よって、各アレイ導波路に対して(式6)が成り立つように温度補償構造を設計することで、アサーマル波長合分波回路が設計可能となる。光路長が短い方からi番目のアレイ導波路に対する光回路構造パラメータの決
定式は以下の(式13)で示される。

ここで、Cは任意の定数で通常0であるが、アレイ導波路の損失一定化を目的にi=1のアレイ導波路に温度補償構造のテーパ部又はセグメント部を挿入するなど、オフセット値を設定しても良い。
また、前記の機能はアレイ導波路でなくスラブ導波路で実現しても良い。図6(b)に示すように温度補償構造をスラブ導波路へ作製する場合、温度補償構造の前後でパワー密度が異なることから、入力側と出力側で異なるテーパ長を設定しても良い。
上記の構造は、実施形態1に記載の方法と同様の方法で作製することができる。
以上のように、本発明の光回路では、光の損失を抑えつつ、温度補償特性の微細な調整が可能な光回路構造を提供することができる。

Claims (4)

  1. 温度補償材料を充填した温度補償構造を有する光導波路を備えた光回路において、
    前記光導波路を伝搬する光波を、前記温度補償材料を充填した前記温度補償構造へ断熱的に遷移させる断熱遷移構造を有し、
    前記光導波路は、上部クラッドおよび下部クラッドに囲まれたコアを有し、上面および側面が前記温度補償材料で覆われて前記温度補償構造を形成し、
    前記断熱遷移構造として、前記温度補償材料の厚みを連続的に変化させるテーパ構造を有し、前記テーパ構造において、前記コアと前記温度補償材料との前記コアの高さ方向の距離および前記コアの幅方向の距離が断熱的に変化する、
    ことを特徴とする光回路。
  2. 前記光導波路のコアと前記温度補償材料が所定の距離だけ離れていること
    を特徴とする請求項1に記載の光回路。
  3. 前記温度補償構造において、前記光導波路のコアの厚さ又は幅が所定の値だけ減少し、前記光導波路のコアと前記温度補償材料が接していること
    を特徴とする請求項1に記載の光回路。
  4. 前記光導波路のコアと前記温度補償材料との間の距離を設計することで単位長さあたりの温度補償量を調節できること
    を特徴とする請求項1乃至3のいずれか一項に記載の光回路。
