PURPOSE:To shorten a time required for the initialization of a magneto-optical disk by initializing a groove part and a land part by two beams, respectively. Optical beams 7 and 8 on which focus control and tracking control are applied and converged at an optical head control circuit 4 are projected on the medium plane of the magneto-optical disk. Simultaneously, a magnetic field of several hundred oersteds is added on the medium plane by a magnet 3 controlled by a magnetic field control circuit 5. Magnetized inversion at the magnetic field of the magnet 3 occurs by heating a part irradiated by the optical beams 7 and 8, and the magnetizing direction of the medium is arranged with that generated by the magnet 3.
