Various structures have been considered for oxygen sensors, but for example, oxygen ion-conducting solid electrolytes such as zirconia stabilized with yttrium oxide are used to form a cylindrical container with one end closed. Then, inner and outer electrodes made of platinum are formed on the outer surface of this container, and a gas containing a certain amount of oxygen, such as air, is placed inside the container as a standard substance.
A structure is known in which the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure ratio between the internal standard substance and the gas to be measured, which are in contact with the inner and outer electrodes of the solid electrolyte container, respectively, is converted into a potential difference, thereby detecting the oxygen concentration of the gas to be measured. In automobiles, this oxygen sensor plays the role of detecting the oxygen concentration in exhaust gas, which is fed back to the engine's air-fuel ratio control mechanism, and is indispensable for exhaust gas purification systems that use three-way catalysts. .

A conventional oxygen sensor usually has a structure as shown in FIG. 1 when air is used as an internal standard substance. That is, element a has inner and outer electrodes a 2 and a 3 formed on the inner and outer surfaces of a container-shaped body a 1 made of an oxygen ion-conducting solid electrolyte.
The potential of a2 is taken out from the potential extraction terminal j via the stem e and spring k inserted into the opening of the container-like body a1 , and the potential of the outer electrode a3 is taken out from the housing b.
is transmitted to and taken out to the outside.

1. In order to ensure that the gas to be measured and the internal standard gas do not mix and to ensure a certain amount of protrusion into the gas to be measured, the element must be made large, and the top end is in contact with the outside air, so the temperature is low. It takes time to reach the minimum operating temperature at which the element starts operating, and at the same time, it is difficult to reach the minimum operating temperature especially when the temperature of the gas to be measured is low.

2 When the sensor is attached to the exhaust pipe of a car and driven, water may splash onto the exposed part of the upper half of the sensor, and the drop in temperature caused by the water is quickly transmitted to the element via the housing and sealing, so this situation can cause high temperatures. If this occurs in the current state, the element made of zirconia, which is vulnerable to thermal shock, will be destroyed.

3. When caulking the upper end of the housing, the structure of the oxygen sensor means that the caulking force applied to the upper end of the housing will be applied directly to the element, and the element will be destroyed unless the work is carried out with extreme caution.

Like conventional oxygen sensors, this improved oxygen sensor uses a zirconia solid electrolyte stabilized with yttrium oxide to form an element, but the element is miniaturized to the size necessary for contact with the gas being measured. , this element is tightly fixed to the tip of a ceramic insulator. An example of this is shown in the second
This will be explained with reference to the figures and FIG. The element 1 is a cylindrical body with one end closed, and an inner electrode 1c and an outer electrode 1d are formed on the inner and outer surfaces of a container body 1a formed in a multi-stage shoulder portion 1b in which the outer diameter near the opening is larger than the outer diameter of the tip. A porous coating layer 1e is further formed on the outer electrode 1d (see FIG. 2a). The element 1 formed in this way is
As shown in the figure, it is inserted into a cylindrical outer ceramic insulator 2, which has a fixing part 2a corresponding to the shape of the shoulder part 1b of the element 1 inside the tip, together with the outer electrode potential extraction fitting 4, and fixed. Part 2a
Sealing process is performed. Next, a through hole 3a is provided in this outer ceramic insulator 2, and an element contact portion 3 is provided inside the outer ceramic insulator 2.
b. Insert the lead wire 5 for the inner electrode and the inner ceramic insulator 3 having the groove 3c, and assemble it so that the element contact part 3b is in contact with the opening of the element 1. Finally, insert the outer ceramic The insulator 2 is set in the housing 6 using a locking portion 2b provided on the outer periphery of the insulator 2 to obtain an improved oxygen sensor. In the figure, 7 is an element protection cover, 8 is an inorganic adhesive filled to improve the adhesion between the inner and outer ceramic insulators 2 and 3, 8a is a sealing material made of inorganic adhesive, and 8b is a housing 6. and the protective cover 9 are welded, 9 is the protective cover, 9

The improved oxygen sensor with this basic configuration has the following features: 1) miniaturization of the element, 2) prevention of element cracking,
Although it has the advantages of 3) improved workability and 4) simplification, it still has the following drawbacks. That is, 1) the shape of the inner ceramic insulator 3 inserted into the outer ceramic insulator 2 is complicated; 2) The lead wire 5 is connected to the contact protrusion 3
Although conductivity is secured by welding or the like in b, the function as a sensor may not be exhibited due to poor contact with the element opening or detachment due to poor welding. Furthermore, 3) since the shape of the inner insulator 3 is large enough to close the entire inside of the outer insulator 2, thermal conductivity is improved and the element temperature becomes unstable. Furthermore, 4) Since the inorganic adhesive 8 is used as a filler and adhesive, this inorganic adhesive penetrates into the internal electrodes of the element and causes deterioration of sensor characteristics. There are many problems that need to be solved.

The oxygen sensor having the structure shown in FIG. 5 was taken as an example of the present invention, and the oxygen sensors having the structure shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 were taken as Comparative Example A and Comparative Example B. These sensors were attached to the exhaust pipe of an automobile engine, the engine was stopped once after steady operation, and the temperature rise at the tip of the element was shown in FIG. 6 when the engine was restarted after a certain period of time. In the figure, the engine restart point is indicated by an arrow S. As is clear from FIG. 6, the embodiment of the present invention closely followed the change in engine exhaust temperature over time, and good results were obtained. On the other hand, it can be clearly seen that in Comparative Examples A and B, the temperature rise at the tip of the element is slow, and the control signal (asterisk) is also generated at a late time.

FIG. 7 is a graph showing changes in sensor electromotive force when the sensors of Examples and Comparative Examples A and B are exposed to a rich atmosphere and the temperature is increased. As can be seen from the figure, the example of the present invention shows a rapid rise in electromotive force compared to comparative examples A and B. In the figure, when comparing the temperature at the tip of the element until the electromotive force reaches 0.45V, it is clearly seen that the example sensor rises by about 80°C to 50°C faster than the comparative example A and B sensors. In addition,
In the sensor of the example, no wire breakage or poor contact was observed during use.

[Claims for Utility Model Registration] An oxygen sensor consisting of an element formed by forming electrodes on the inner and outer surfaces of a container-shaped body made of an oxygen ion-conducting solid electrolyte and closely fixed to the tip of a cylindrical ceramic insulator. In this step, a cylindrical inner electrode potential extraction fitting having a bulging part in the middle in the axial direction is positioned in the ceramic insulator, and a positioning pipe is inserted into the ceramic insulator from the side opposite to the element fixing side. An oxygen sensor characterized in that a space is provided within the tip of the ceramic insulator by being locked to the bulge.
