Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title composition suitable as tapes useful for presser winding of flame-resistant cable, having excellent oxygen index, foaming and flexibility by blending a polymer not containing a halogen as a binder with an expansion layer forming agent, carbonized layer forming agent and metal hydrate in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:(A) 100 pts.wt. polymer (e.g., EVA, EEA, PE or BR) not containing a halogen as a binder is blended with (B) 80-600 pts.-wt. expansion layer forming agent (e.g., ammonium phosphate), (C) 30-200 pts. wt. carbonized layer forming agent (e.g., starch or hexitol) and (D) 10-500 pts.wt. metal hydrate (e.g., aluminum hydrate) to give the aimed composition. The composition is applied to flame-retardant ground fabric or woody fiber cloth to give an expandable flame-retardant tape.

(Prior art) In recent years, there has been a strong demand for various facilities and structures to be made incombustible and flame retardant from the standpoint of disaster prevention, and in the field of electric wires and cables, there is a strong need to make them incombustible and flame retardant. However, there is a need for the development of fire-resistant cables that can withstand long-term use.

Fireproof materials for fireproof cables can be roughly divided into foamable and non-foamable materials, and foamable materials are attracting attention because they suppress heat conduction by simply applying a thin layer.

However, nowadays, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion containing a carbonization agent such as starch and a foaming layer forming agent such as ammonium phosphate as the main ingredients is applied to cotton cloth. In such conventional fire-resistant compositions, the carbide formed by heating tends to become brittle and scatter due to the force of the fire, and the base fabric itself has low heat resistance, causing it to shrink or become brittle and crumble, resulting in poor fire resistance. It had the disadvantage of being inferior.

Flame-retardant compositions made by adding halogen-based flame retardants to halogen-based polymers are known, but while such halogen-based flame-retardant compositions have the advantage of good flame retardancy,
The disadvantage is that when burned, it emits toxic halogen gas. Therefore, in the present invention, a polymer containing no halogen element is used.

The foamed layer forming agent is added in an amount of 80 to 600 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the binder. If it is less than 80 parts by weight, there is a risk that a foamed layer will not be formed in the event of combustion, while if it exceeds 600 parts by weight, it will be difficult to process and the physical properties will be extremely poor.

As a carbonized layer forming agent for forming a carbonized layer together with such a foamed layer, a carbonized layer forming agent that has been conventionally used in this type of flame retardant composition can be effectively used. For example, carbohydrates such as starch and sucrose, and polyhydric alcohols such as hexitol and pentaerythritol can be effectively used.

In the present invention, a metal hydrate is added to such a formulation. A foamable fireproof composition prepared by adding a foam layer forming agent, a carbonized layer forming agent, etc. to a binder as described above has the advantage that the composition has a large expansion ratio, but has the disadvantage that the foamed carbonized layer is somewhat brittle. However, it has been found that by adding a metal hydrate, a strong carbonized layer is formed, although the foaming ratio is slightly lowered.

The amount of one or more metal hydrates is 10 to 500 parts by weight. If it is less than 10 parts by weight, the effect of reinforcing the carbonized layer may not be exhibited, and if it exceeds 500 parts by weight, the foaming ratio may become too low.

It is also possible to add various additives to the flame retardant compositions as described above. In this case, the solvent may basically be any solvent as long as it dissolves the flame retardant composition and does not attack the flame retardant base fabric, such as aromatic solvents such as toluene and xylene, hydrocarbons, etc. Examples include one or more of carbon tetrachloride, chlorine-based hydrocarbons such as tricrene, and ketone-based solvents such as MEK.

Using such a solvent, the concentration of the flame retardant composition is preferably 10 to 50%, and the flame retardant composition is applied onto the base fabric by means such as gluing. If the concentration of the flame retardant composition is less than 10%, the viscosity will be too low and machining will be difficult;
It has the disadvantage that it oozes through the base fabric. On the other hand, if the concentration of the flame retardant composition exceeds 50%, the viscosity becomes high, making it difficult to apply glue.
