A mating ring placed on the rotating shaft side slides into contact with a seal ring fixed to the housing side of the machine, and a compression ring biased by a coil spring is fitted to this mating ring via a V-packet. The seal ring is elastically pressed against the mating ring to form a shaft seal, and the flushing liquid injected from the flushing hole provided in the housing of the machine body causes the seal ring and mating ring to slide. In the mechanical seal formed by flushing the compression ring, a plurality of pumping holes are provided circumferentially through the end of the compression ring located close to the V-packet, and the inner circumferential surface to which these pumping holes correspond.
