Abstract

PURPOSE:To form an org. thin film having an excellent orientational property by providing a shutter in the flight path of org. compd. particles, imparting ultrasonic vibration to a substrate, or irradiating the substrate by specified light at the time of dry-forming an org. thin film on the substrate surface by vacuum deposition. CONSTITUTION:An org. compd. 110 is charged into a crucible 121 provided with a heater 120 in a vacuum vessel 100, heated by the heater 120, vaporized, orderly oriented without decomposing the org. compd., and deposited on a substrate 130. The shutters 153 and 154 to be rotated by a motor 151 are provided in the flight path of the org. compd. particles, and only the particles having an optional velocity distribution are passed through the shutters and sent to the substrate 130. An ultrasonic vibrator is incorporated into the substrate 130, and ultrasonic vibration is impressed from the external terminal 166 to impart migration energy to the molecules of the org. compd. reaching the substrate 130. Alternatively, the surface of the substrate 130 is irradiated by the light 177 having optional wavelength and spectrum in the presence of an electric field caused by an electrode 172 to excite the org. compd. molecules reaching the substrate 130. An org. material thin film having an orderly oriented or clear layer structure can be formed in this way.

<Problems to be solved by the invention> However, despite the vigorous research mentioned above,
Thin film formation using conventional vacuum evaporation methods is performed by reusing inorganic vacuum evaporation equipment (including molecular beam epitaxial equipment) as is, and the following problems arise in producing organic thin films with good orientation: All countermeasures have not been taken.

■ Many organic compounds, especially organic compounds with electronic and optical functions, have aromatic groups or unsaturated groups in their molecules, but these compounds tend to form an association state, so it is difficult to deposit them as they are. The organic molecules in the associated and non-associated states are mixed and evaporated, reaching the substrate as is. It is generally believed that the velocity energy distribution of molecules or atoms evaporated at a certain temperature follows the Boltzmann distribution.

For this reason, particles of molecules with different energy distributions reach the substrate due to the different molecular weights such as associated and non-associated states, and the energy distribution when reaching the substrate is different, so the molecular particles on the substrate are The aligned orientation is perturbed.

■ Vacuum deposition of inorganic compounds that arranges atoms on a substrate, as seen in molecular beam epitaxial method, is generally achieved by increasing the substrate temperature and giving the atoms and molecules that reach the substrate an appropriate amount of migration energy. results have been obtained. However, organic compounds have a high vapor pressure and a low decomposition temperature, so raising the substrate temperature unnecessarily will result in molecules that have reached the substrate re-evaporating and not adhering to the substrate, or will decompose on the substrate. On the other hand, when the substrate temperature is lowered, there is not enough energy for migration, so the alignment of molecules on the substrate is incomplete.
Or, the state is such that the alignment is not aligned at all.

■ In the vapor deposition of inorganic compounds, molecules and atoms that reach a substrate move on the substrate with appropriate migration energy, and when they reach a bonding site, they form a chemical bond and the atoms and molecules become aligned and oriented. However, in the vapor deposition of organic molecules, the bonds between the organic molecules deposited on the substrate are not as strong as chemical bonds, but rather with van der Waalska bonds, which have a much weaker bonding force. If the direction of the organic molecules deposited on the substrate is not aligned and maintained by an external force, the aligned orientation will be disturbed by the velocity energy of the molecules that subsequently reach the substrate.

■ When trying to deposit organic compounds with different chemical structures on each other, it goes without saying that the state of alignment at the interface between the thin films of both substances has a great effect on electronic and optical functions. In vapor deposition, the evaporation temperature varies greatly depending on the individual molecular species. For this reason, the velocity energy of organic molecular particles that reach the substrate surface differs depending on the molecular type, and if they are deposited as is, they cannot be deposited on the substrate surface under the same conditions. There are great difficulties in control.

Means for Solving the Problems> A method for producing a dry organic thin film according to a first invention which achieves the above object is to heat and evaporate at least one organic compound as a vapor deposition base material in a vacuum. In a dry organic thin film production method using a vacuum evaporation method in which organic compound molecular particles are deposited or layered on at least one substrate, organic compound molecules having an arbitrary speed are produced by a shutter mechanism provided on the flight path of the evaporated organic compound molecular particles. In this method, even when the substrate temperature cannot be raised and the organic compound molecules that have reached the substrate cannot be given sufficient migratian energy to move and align on the substrate, ultrasonic vibration can be used to Be able to perform migration of organic compound molecules.

Furthermore, when the organic compound molecules move in the migration process on the substrate surface, alignment control in a certain direction is promoted. Note that this effect is particularly effective for molecules having an electron-donating substituent and an electron-accepting substituent that have a large dipole moment in a photoexcited state.

The apparatus of the first embodiment is a specific example of the apparatus for carrying out the first invention, and by using this apparatus, organic compound molecular particles having an arbitrary velocity component can be deposited, It would be possible to deposit organic compound molecular particles with uniform velocity energy on a substrate. Furthermore, for example, organic compound molecules that evaporate at low temperatures can be vapor-deposited as particles having a high velocity, which has been difficult in the past, or conversely, organic compound molecules that evaporate at high temperatures can be vapor-deposited by extracting only the slow-velocity component. Furthermore, since the associated and non-associated molecules have different molecular weights and different evaporation rate components, it is possible to distinguish between these and deposit them on the substrate.

The device of the second embodiment is also a specific example for carrying out the first invention. According to this device, the vapor deposition base material 110A
, 110B, only those having a desired velocity pass through the rotating shutters 153, 154. In this way, the flight paths of the two types of flying organic compound molecular particles that arrive independently include the substrates 130A,
By rotating the substrate support stand 241 so that B alternately moves, two types of organic compounds can be laminated on each of the substrates 130A and 130B. At this time, by modulating the rotation speed of the motor 151 that rotationally drives the rotary shutters 153, 154, each vapor deposition base material 110A, 110B
It is also possible for the evaporated molecules from to pass through with different velocity components.

When a plurality of organic compounds are stacked and deposited using the apparatus of the second embodiment, the degree of evaporation differs between each compound, and therefore the velocity energy of each compound reaching the substrate is uneven, making it difficult to control. Traditional problems can be solved. That is, the heating mechanism 12 is an independent evaporation source.
It is possible to deposit the evaporated molecules from 0 onto the substrates 130A and 130B by aligning the velocity energy of each organic compound molecule particle with a single shutter mechanism 150, or by selecting the optimum velocity energy for each particle. Further, the associated and non-associated states of each compound are separated and distinguished from each other on the substrate 130A.

Similar to the first embodiment, it is also possible to deposit on 130B.

Furthermore, each of the devices described above (device examples 1 to 7) can be equipped with a mechanism that simultaneously irradiates light and applies an electric field to the substrate surface, thereby controlling the arrangement in a certain direction on the substrate surface. promoted. At this time, the wavelength of the light irradiated onto the substrate is selected from the wavelengths that are absorbed by molecules to be deposited, and may be monochromatic light or light with a wide spectrum. Examples of light sources include various lasers, mercury lamps, and xenon lamps. The degree of the electric field applied to the substrate surface varies depending on the material to be deposited, but it is usually preferable to apply an electric field of several kV to several tens of kV with electrodes spaced several mm apart.
