Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an odorant capable of exhibiting a high odorizing effect even in a small amt. and hence being economical and capable of limiting the sulfur content of a gas to a low level by incorporating an unsatd. sulfide represented by a particular formula as an essential component. CONSTITUTION:An odorant for fuel gases is obtd. by incorporating an unsatd. sulfide represented by R1-S-R2 [wherein R1 is a 4 C unsatd. alkyl; and R2 is a 1-5 C (un)satd. alkyl] (e.g., 2-butenyl methyl sulfide) as an essential component. This odorant exhibits a greater odorizing effect in a smaller amt. than that of the known sulfide odorant regarded as being the most excellent. This is economical and simultaneously makes it possible to limit the sulfur content of a gas to a low level. This odorant is readily soluble in an org. solvent, insol uble in water, less in adsorptivity, free from metal corrosion and extremely chemically stable so that it is an extremely advantageous odorant.

Traditionally preferred odorants include thiols and sulfides, with sulfides having a higher perceived concentration (the limit concentration at which the quality of the odor becomes unnoticeable) than thiols. Concentration for example μg/1

(Effects of the Invention) As mentioned above, the odorant of the present invention exhibits a greater odor-adding effect in a smaller amount than the known sulfide-based odorant, which is said to be the best in the past, but this is also economically efficient. Notably, it also has the effect of making it possible to keep the sulfur content in the gas low. In addition, the odorant of the present invention is easily soluble in organic solvents, insoluble in water, has low adsorption, does not corrode metals, and is extremely chemically stable. It also satisfies the required properties, and its practical effects are significantly greater than those of conventional odorants.
