【考案の詳細な説明】 (イ) 産業上の利用分野 この考案は液晶表示素子(以下LCDと呼称す
る)とその駆動部とをフレキシブルコネクタで接
続してなる液晶表示装置に関する。

量の多いLCDにおいては電極端子数が多いため、
端子部の電極パターンピツチが狭く(例えば640
×200ドツトのグラフイツク表示では0.35mmピツ
チ)が第1図に示すように3辺だけでなく4辺に
まで電極端子が設けられるようになつた[第1図
において1は表示部、2,2′,2″,2は端子
部、3,3′,3″,3は電極端子]。このよう
な状況において圧着式ゴムコネクタは、LCD端
子部の電極と駆動部の電極との位置合せが難しい
ため作業性が低く、また水分の付着により電極間
リークの発生することが多い。したがつて最近で
は上記接続をフレキシブル基板からなるフレキシ
ブルコネクタで行うようになつた。このコネクタ
による接続はゴムコネクタ圧着方式よりも位置合
せの自由度が大であり、接続を熱圧着や接着剤な
どの組み合わせによつて行うことができ高い信頼
性の接続が得られ、特に熱圧着法の場合はこの圧
着部の近傍を防湿剤で被覆することにより高湿時
でも水分付着を防止できて電極間リークを避ける
ことができる。

1辺がフレキシブルコネクタ12によつて熱圧着
部13,17にて接続され、第3辺がフレキシブ
ルコネクタ12′によつて熱圧着部13′,17′
で接続されている(但し第2辺の接続は図示せ
ず)。また15は駆動部14の信号発生回路基板
であり、16,16′はLSIである。しかしこの
場合最後に第3辺のフレキシブルコネクタの端子
を駆動部14の端子に熱圧着する場合、他の2辺
が同一面上に固定されているため作業性がよくな
い。この対策として第3図に示すように駆動部2
4を2分割する方法が用いられ、LCD21の第
1辺と第3辺が駆動部24が2分割された信号発
生回路基板25,25′にフレキシブルコネクタ
22,22′によつて熱圧着部23,23′,2
5,25′にて接続される(第2辺の接続は図示
せず)。次いで2分割された基板25,25′をワ
イヤー線27などで接続される。この場合は駆動
部24が2分割されているので第3辺の接続も良
好な作業性で行うことができるが、部品点数や工
程数が増加するので信頼性に悪影響を与える。

この考案のひとつの態様として駆動部の基板にフ
レキシブルコネクタの通過しうる溝が設けられ、
この溝を通過させたフレキシブルコネクタによつ
て、液晶表示素子の二辺以上に設けられた端子部
の少なくとも一つの端子部が駆動部の液晶表示素
子と対面しない側の面の端子部に接続されてなる
液晶表示装置が提供される。
