FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a communication system including a facsimile machine 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The facsimile machine 1 is connected to facsimile machines 9 and 10 via a switching network 8. The facsimile machine 1 is equipped with a control section 5 consisting of a microcomputer or the like that controls the entire apparatus. A communication control section 7 is connected to the control section 5, and the communication control section 7 communicates with the other party's facsimile machine using, for example, the transmission control procedure of CCITT recommendation G3. A reading section 2 , a recording section 3 , a storage section 4 , and an image processing section 6 are connected to the control section 5 . The reading section 2 not only provides the document image as an image signal to the control section 5, but also detects length information of the document in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction and sends it to the control section 5. Here, as a method of detecting length information, the length information in the main scanning direction is obtained by painting the document transport path black and counting the number of pixels (white) in the first line of the document obtained by COD. And also, COD

It includes a stupid vertical/horizontal conversion circuit that performs encoding and decompression, and performs processing to convert the arrangement of image signals. The communication control unit 7 includes a modem and an NCU, and also includes length information in the main scanning direction and sub-scanning direction of the original given from the control unit 5 in a control signal NSS and transmits it, and vice versa. The length information of the received control signal NSS is given to the control section 5.

とき、回線断の手順が行われる。It is assumed that the other party's facsimile machine 20 has the same configuration as the facsimile machine 1. Reference numeral 102 indicates an image signal storage means corresponding to the storage section 4 in FIG. 1, where the shaded area is the area where image signals are stored, and the capacity of the empty area is indicated by W4. The control unit 5 transmits the communication continuation stop notification means 101 based on the program of the flowchart shown in FIG.
Work as. The communication continuation cancellation notification means 101 has a storage capacity table 103, receives length information (L2.H2) in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction of the document 104 sent from the other party's facsimile device 20, and based on this, The storage capacity table 103 is searched to detect the corresponding capacity W2. In the storage capacity table 103, when the lengths (Li, Hi) in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction are determined, assuming that the original has characters, figures, etc. written on it as standard, the corresponding image signal is stored. The capacity is determined, and the corresponding capacity (WHVbit) of the image signal storage means 102 is stored as a memory table. Note that the image signal storage means 102 stores encoded and compressed image signals. The communication continuation cancellation notification means 101 compares the capacity W2 obtained by searching the storage capacity table 103 with the capacity W4 of the empty area of the image signal storage means 102, and determines that W2≦W.
If it is 4, it is notified to continue the communication, and if W2>W4, it is notified to stop the communication. This notification is performed from the communication control unit 7 using a predetermined control signal (for example, DCN) of the transmission control procedure. When the notification of cancellation is given to the other party's facsimile machine 20, a line disconnection procedure is performed.

The process starts with the arrival of a call, and the length information is received and passed from the communication control unit 7 to the control unit 5 (3Ql). The control unit 5 searches its own storage capacity table 103 to find the storage space required to store the image signal (302). Next, the capacity of the free space in the storage unit 4 is checked (303), and it is detected whether storage is possible based on the size relationship between the capacity of the free space in the storage unit 4 and the storage space required to store the image signal. (304)
. If storage is possible here, the control unit 5
A control signal indicating that reception is possible is transmitted to the other party's facsimile machine (305), and the process proceeds to image signal reception and storage processing (306). When the reception and storage processing of the image signal of one page of the document is completed, the control signal sent from the other party's facsimile device is given from the communication control unit 7 (for example, in G3, MPS.

It will be the end. On the other hand, if it is detected in step 304 that storage is not possible, the control unit 5 sends a control signal to the communication control unit 7 indicating that reception is impossible and to stop communication. The message is transmitted (30B), and the line is disconnected.

B) is characterized in that the operation shown in the flowchart of FIG. 4 is performed. First, a received image signal is sent to the image processing unit 6, decoded and expanded, and subjected to error correction, etc., and then encoded and compressed again and stored in the storage unit 4 (401).

For example, if the length of the original to be sent in the main scanning direction is 250 m and the length in the sub-scanning direction is 180 s, printing will be performed on the smaller A4 recording paper instead of the A3 recording paper set. is possible, so the process branches to YES.

Conversion to set the sub-scanning direction to 250#1I11) is performed,
It is encoded and compressed again and stored in the storage unit 4 (403 input, then
It is determined whether to record the image signal of the original document immediately or to keep it stored because there is relay communication, confidential communication, no recording paper, etc. (404). The data for this determination is either included in and sent in a control signal from the other party's facsimile machine, or input in advance from an operation panel (not shown) of the facsimile machine 1. If it is not recorded immediately, the process immediately proceeds to step 307 in Figure 3, but
When immediate recording is specified, the recording paper (standard size paper) is selected based on whether or not the orientation has been converted (405).
, the image signal is read out from the storage section 4, sent to the image processing section 6, decoded and expanded, and further sent to the recording section 3 for recording output (
406).
