(Prior art and problems) Burnable poison rod (BPR) is used as one of the control materials for fuel assemblies in pressurized water reactor power plants.
Burnable poison assemblies (BPA), which consist of a superstructure including a thimble plug, a hold-down spring, and a hold-down bar attachment nut, are used, and are usually removed as used after one cycle. Since it is not a fuel, it is stored in spent fuel storage pools as waste without being reprocessed.

Conventionally, such BPA is stored by cutting it into BPR and superstructure using a large cutting device and storing it in a pool, but this storage is not only temporary storage, but also a semi-permanent storage process. Not yet established. Moreover, even though it was severed,
BPR has a total length of around 4 m, and its volume is large, requiring large storage containers and storage facilities, and the appropriate storage method is an important issue at present.

(Structure of the Invention) That is, one of the features of the present invention is that the upper and lower end plugs of the BPR are cut off, the pellets inside are taken out, and the cladding tube is wound up to reduce the volume. The other method is to store the pellets and the wound cladding tube separately.
The pellets and cladding tube are stored inside and outside the storage container.
Alternatively, they can be stored together on one side and the other, transported in a transport container, and stored in stacks in an underground storage room.

FIG. 1 shows the BPR volume reduction process which is one of the main parts of the present invention, in which the lower and upper end plugs 2 and 3 of the BPR 1 taken out from the upper structure are sequentially cut using a cutting device 4 as appropriate. It is cut, the pellets 6 inside are taken out and the cladding tube 5 is separated as a simple tube body, and then the cladding tube 5 is crushed in the radial direction to reduce the volume into a band shape, and in order to further reduce the volume, it is rolled into an overwound shape. It's being rolled up.

On the other hand, FIG. 3 shows an example of a rectangular parallelepiped storage container. In this case, the pellets 6 and the wrapped cladding tube 5' can be stored separately inside and outside, but it is also possible to store the pellets 6 in one side. It is also possible to store the wrapped cladding tube 5' on one side, or in the form of a sandwich in which the pellets 6 are sandwiched between the wrapped cladding tubes 5'. In this case, the transport container 8 also has a rectangular parallelepiped shape.

To explain how BPR is stored, first
The BPR is cut according to the steps shown in Figures A to D. This work is usually done underwater, and the lower end plug 2 is cut by the cutting device 4 (see Figure A).
Next, the upper end plug 3 is cut off (see figure B), the pellets 6 contained therein, such as Al 2 O 3 pellets, are taken out (see figure C), and the empty cladding tube 5 is appropriately crushed in the radial direction and rolled. (not shown) to reduce the volume (see Figure 2).

(Effects of the Invention) As described above, the present invention is a method for reducing the volume of BPR by cutting the upper and lower end plugs of used BPR, taking out the pellets inside and winding up the cladding tube, and storing the same. Since the used BPR is separated into pellets and cladding tube, and the cladding tube is rolled up and stored, storage space can be used efficiently and there is no need to store it in the pool inside the power plant as in the case of conventional methods. In addition to making it easier to store dissolved and radioactive BPR, since the cladding tube is rolled up and stored, there is no need to use a container with a large capacity as in the past, making it easier to manufacture and handle storage containers. It is extremely effective as a semi-permanent storage method for BPR.

Moreover, the storage container separates pellets and cladding tubes into one container and stores them in a storage warehouse by stacking them, which is fundamentally different from the conventional method of simply storing BPR as is. By increasing the ratio, the internal volume of the storage can be used effectively,
This has great practical effects as a storage method for BPR, which is expected to increase in the future as underground storage is formed.
