Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 〔産業上の利用分野〕 本発明は、前後に配置された2つの表示セルを1し、そ
れらの間にトランスフレクタが配置されており、前方表
示セルはゲスト・ホスト液晶であり、さらに後方表示セ
ルをその裏側から照明することができる光源と、それぞ
れ前方表示セルの画像電極の背後に同列に配置されかつ
同時制御可能な、同じ構造の後方表示セルの画像電極と
を有する液晶表示装置に関する。
〔従来の技術〕
この種の液晶表示装置において、前方表示セルだけでな
く、後方表示セルもゲスト・ホスト表示セルとして構成
することは公知である。このような構造は、液晶表示装
置の制御された画像電極の範囲と制御されていない表示
範囲との間の高いコントラストが得られず、かつ液晶表
示装置を観察する際に前方画像電極と後方画像電極との
間の視差が生じるという欠点を有する。
〔発明が解決しようとする課題〕
本発明の課題は、制御された画像電極の範囲が、それを
嘔り囲む制御されていない表示範囲に対して高いコント
ラストで表示することの可能な透過反射形(Trans
flekziv )  液晶表示装置を提供することで
ある。
〔課題を解決するための手段〕
この課題は本発明により、後方表示セルが制御された画
像電極と制御されていない表示セルの表示範囲との間の
コントラスト比の高い表示セルであることにより解決さ
れる。この構成により、かすかな視角依存性ならびに高
いコントラスト比を有する、反射ならひに透過形液晶表
示装置が達成される。同時に、双方の表示セルの間の視
差も小さく保たれる。
有利に、後方表示セルはTNiNセルである。
この極めて強いコントラストの表示セルは、透過形表示
では液晶表示装置の高い総合コントラストを惹起する。
視角依存性をさらに減少するために、前方表示セルは相
遷移・ゲスト・ホスト表示セルであってもよい。これに
より同時に、反射形表示では良好なコントラストが得ら
れ、透過形表示では減少した視差が達成される。
トランスフレクタが散乱性、特に等方性散乱のトランス
フレクタである場合、この除虫じる拡散性の光散乱によ
って、後方表示セルの像はトランスフレクタの前面にわ
ずかにぼやけた輪郭で表示されるため、双方の表示セル
間の視差はさらに減少されている。
TNセルを後方セルとして使用する場合、TNセルの偏
光子により生成した偏光は、等方性散乱のトランスフレ
クタにより偏光解消されて不規則な散乱光になり、この
ためTNセルの視角依存性は十分に消去される。従って
、表示の全画像の視角依存性の影響も生じない。
〔実施例〕
添付図面には本発明の液晶表示装置の1実施例が断面図
で示されている。
図示された液晶表示装置は、前方表示セル1と後方表示
セル2とからなり、これらは前後に配置されており、か
つその間に等方性散乱のトランスフレクタ3が配置され
ている。観察者に離反する液晶表示装置の側には、透過
形表示のための光源4が配置されており、この光源の光
の進路は光&5によって図示されている。光源4が遮断
されている場合、表示装置の表示は図示された光線6に
従って反射により行なわれる。
前方表示セル1は相遷移・ゲスト・ホス)FE示セルで
あり、この表示セルはセル空間IIでそのつど前方透明
基板7上に画像電極8s?よび8′を有する。
後方透明基板9のセル空間側には、全面に背面電極10
が配置されている。基板γと基板9との間に形成された
セル空間11は、液晶物質が充填されている。
後方表示セル2Fi、前方透明基板12と後方透明基板
13とを有し、それらの間が液晶物質で充填したセル空
間14が形成されているTN表示セルである。
基板12s?よび13のセル空間14に離反する側には
、偏光子15が配置されておシ、前方基板1211tセ
ル空間側に画像電極16かよぴ画像電極8および16は
同じ構造を有しかつ前後に整列して配置されている。同
様に、画像電極8′および16′も同じ構造を有しかつ
同様に前後に整列して配置されている。

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 1、前後に配置された2つの表示セルを有し、それらの
    間にトランスフレクタが配置されており、前方表示セル
    はゲスト・ホスト液晶セルであり、さらに後方表示セル
    をその裏側から照明することができる光源と、それぞれ
    前方表示セルの画像電極の後方に整列して配置されかつ
    同時に制御可能な、同じ構造の後方表示セルの画像電極
    とを有する液晶表示装置において、後方表示セル(2)
    は制御された画像電極(16、16′)と表示セル(2
    )の制御されていない表示範囲との間のコントラスト比
    の高い表示セルであることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 2、後方表示セル(2)がTN表示セルである請求項1
    項記載の液晶表示装置。 3、前方表示セル(1)が相遷移・ゲスト・ホスト表示
