Abstract

PURPOSE:To permit a label to be stuck properly to a glass bottle without suffering impairment to the appearance of the label by a method wherein a bonding strength between a hot melt agent and the surface of a glass at ordinary temperature is made smaller than that between the hot melt agent and the surface of the label and the strengths of the base materials for the label and the hot melt agent. CONSTITUTION:One end of a plastic label is stuck on a glass bottle with a hot melt agent, the label is wound around the glass bottle and the aforesaid end thereof is overlapped by the other end thereof and the overlapping ends are bonded together with a solvent. The hot melt agent consisting mainly of base material, tackifier, wax and plasticizer and having a bonding strength to the glass surface at ordinary temperature smaller than any of the bonding strength between the hot melt agent and the label and the strengths of the base materials for the label and the hot melt agent, is used. Since the solvent is used in only bonding the label ends together, the printed surface of the label is not contaminated with the solvent, the label can be peeled of easily from the bottle and the recycle cost of the bottle is reduced.

Conventionally, as a method of cutting a long plastic label in a predetermined manner and pasting it onto a glass bottle, there is a known method of pasting the label and the glass bottle using a plastic label solvent.

For example, in labels made of expanded polystyrene sheets, methylene chloride is used as a solvent for adhering to glass bottles, but in this case, if the amount of solvent applied is small, the solvent evaporates before the adhesion is completed. As a result, the adhesive strength between the glass bottle and the label is lost, and the label easily peels off.

However, if too much solvent is applied, the solvent may penetrate to the surface of the label, damaging its appearance, or depending on the atmosphere at the time of application, it may take time for the solvent to evaporate, resulting in insufficient adhesive strength. or misalignment of the label may occur.
There was a problem in that the allowable range of the amount of coating to obtain a predetermined adhesive strength was narrow.

On the other hand, hot-melt agents are also used to bond plastic labels and glass bottles together; In some cases, when the label is removed from the glass bottle, the hot melt agent remains in the glass bottle, which increases the cost of reuse.

Therefore, the above-mentioned object of the present invention is to provide a hot-melt material whose adhesive strength with a glass surface at room temperature is lower than either of the adhesive strength between the hot-melt agent and the label and the strength of the base material of the label and the hot-melt agent. This is accomplished by applying the label to the glass bottle using an adhesive.

The adhesive strength referred to here is determined by linearly applying a hot melt agent melted at 180°C to a 3 mm thick glass plate at a coating amount of 2 g/m. A 180 degree wide label was crimped to make a sample, and this sample was peeled off at an angle of 180 degrees.
The value was obtained by measuring at 20°C at a peeling speed of 200 mm/min.

According to the present invention, adhesive using solvent is only used for adhering the edges of labels that are easy to adhere, and since the glass bottle and label are adhered using hot melt agent, the printed surface of the label may be contaminated with solvent. Since the label can be reliably fixed without being damaged, labeled glass bottles with high commercial value can be obtained at a high yield.
