Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure the concn. of org. matter by simple procedures of measuring the quantity of the light emitted in the process in which the org. matter in the raw water of water works is oxidized by an oxidizing agent and computing the consumption of the oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:Sample water is injected by a prescribed volume from a sample water container 3 into a reaction ell 1. Further, a prescribed volume of potassium permanganate and acid or alkali soln. are injected into the cell 1. The liquid mixture is heated for a specified period of time by a thermostatic chamber 2 to cause an oxidation reaction. The quantity of the light generated at the time of the reaction is measured by a photoelectron multiplier (photo cell) 11. Computation is made by a computing element 12 in accordance with the count value outputted by the photo cell 11 and the quantity of the light emitted per specified volume of the sample for a specified period of time is determined. Further, the consumption of the potassium permanganate is determined from the quantity of the emitted light by the predetermined conversion equation. The quantity of the emitted light and the consumption of the potassium permanganate are displayed respectively on a display device 13 for the quantity of the emitted light and a display device 14 for the consumption of the potassium permanganate to end the measurement.
