Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the destruction of data written in a hard disk medium by recording comulatively the access frequency when the reading or writing operations are applied to the hard disk medium and therefore estimating the lifetime of the hard disk medium. CONSTITUTION:A processor 1 produces a data reading or writing command to a hard disk device 5, and a magnetic head of the device 5 has an access to a recording part 6. This physical access frequency is written in a data area 14 where the cumulative access frequency of the items 12 are recorded for each corresponding cylinder. Then the processor 1 monitors the data value of the cylinder having the highest access frequency based on a program stored in a main storage 2. When the monitored data value exceeds the access frequency defined previously as a lifetime, an exchanging command is produced for the hard disk media. Thus the data written in the hard disk medium are never destroyed.

FIG. 2 is a diagram showing the data structure in the access count recording area memory. In FIG. 2, the access count recording area 11 has the same number of items 12 for each cylinder as the number of cylinders in the hard disk drive 6 (615 in this embodiment), and the items 12 for each cylinder have a cylinder number 13. It consists of a data area 14 that records the cumulative number of accesses.

Here, the processor 1 issues a command to read or write data to the hard disk device 5, the magnetic head of the hard disk device 5 accesses the recording section 6, and the number of physical accesses is calculated as follows. Write to data area 14 that records the cumulative number of accesses in item 12 for each cylinder. The processor 1 monitors the data value of the most frequently accessed link/link mainly by a program stored in the device 2, and when the number of accesses exceeds a predetermined lifespan, it instructs to replace the hard disk medium. I do.
