In addition, this signal recording layer is irradiated with a linearly polarized light beam such as a laser beam, and the difference in the magnetization direction is detected by detecting the change in the polarization direction due to the Kerr effect that occurs when the light beam is reflected on the surface of the signal recording layer. The information signal is read out.

In other words, the magneto-optical disk is rotatably housed in a cartridge consisting of upper and lower halves, and is opened into the cartridge only during recording and playback by a shutter member slidably attached to the cartridge. The signal recording surface is exposed to the outside through the recording/reproducing opening.

It is necessary to expose the surface to the outside. A mechanism for opening the shutter member is generally provided in a disc loading mechanism that mounts the cartridge in the cartridge mounting portion of the device, and is, for example, a shutter that is rotatably attached to a cartridge holder that constitutes the disc loading mechanism. It is constructed by raising a release lever and a shutter release pin that engages with the shutter member.

A shutter release pin that engages with the shutter member is installed on the tip side of the shutter release lever, and the tip thereof is an elongated shutter release pin that is bored on the life side of the cartridge holder. The cartridge is suspended into a holder into which the cartridge is inserted through a guide groove. Therefore, when the cartridge is inserted into the cartridge holder, the shutter release pin hanging down within the holder engages with the shutter member, and the insertion of the cartridge causes the shutter release pin to be guided into the shutter release pin guide groove. , the shutter member is slid to finally open the recording/reproducing opening in the cartridge. As a result, the signal recording surface of the magneto-optical disk housed in the cartridge is exposed to the outside through the recording/reproducing opening. In this state, the magnetic head and the optical pickup device face the signal recording surface through the recording and reproducing opening, and recording and reproducing are performed.

がある。However, cartridges that are not compatible with this optical disk recording and/or playback device, that is, they contain a different type of disk that cannot be recorded or played back, such as a 3.5-inch floppy disk or a read-only CD-ROM, are also compatible with the above-mentioned optical disk recording and/or playback device. Since the outer shape of the magnetic disk is approximately the same as that of the cartridge in which the magnetic disk is housed, there is a risk that the magnetic disk may be inserted into the cartridge holder. In this way, if a cartridge containing a different type of disk that is not compatible with this recording and/or playback device is inserted, not only can information signals be written to or read from these disks, but also floppy disks etc. If the cartridge is thin like this, it cannot be inserted or removed, and it may come into contact with magnetic heads, optical pickup devices, etc., and damage these devices.
